Summary
Nathel & Nathel is a family-owned, four-generation fresh produce wholesaler at the Hunts Point Terminal Market. We are adding a Junior QC Inspector on the inbound side, especially to cover Sundays. You will be the first set of eyes on our produce: checking arriving loads against spec and U.S. grade standards, documenting problems with photos and temperature data, and keeping the arrival log that feeds sales and buyers each morning. This is an entry-level, salaried union position. No produce experience is required. We will train you, with a path to QC Inspector.
What you will do
- Inspect incoming loads against buyer specs and U.S. grade standards: verify count, take pulp temperatures, check trailer temperature and download the temperature recorder, score condition and quality defects, and calculate defect percentages.
- Photograph problems (damage, decay, wrong product, temperature issues) and file them with the load record and in the QC Teams channel.
- Put bad or questionable product on hold and refer accept / reject calls to the QC Inspector on shift.
- Enter QC results in the inbound load arrival log so the morning digest to sales and buyers is accurate and on time.
- Keep food-safety, temperature, sanitation, and lot/traceability logs for inbound shipments.
- Cover the Sunday receiving window and hand off open holds and issues to the next shift.
- Work closely with the QC Inspectors, warehouse foremen, sales and buyers during the receiving window.
What we are looking for
- Reliable attendance and punctuality on an overnight / pre-dawn schedule.
- Basic computer, email, and smartphone-app skills.
- Attention to detail and willingness to learn and follow written standards.
- A plus (not required): experience in produce, grocery, food service, warehouse, shipping or receiving; coursework in agriculture or food science; Spanish/English bilingual; food-safety, OSHA-10, or forklift-awareness training.
Essential functions (with or without reasonable accommodation)
- Work in refrigerated rooms (about 34–36°F), on open loading docks, and in and out of trailers.
- Stand and walk most of an 8-hour shift; bend, reach, and climb into trailers.
- Repeatedly lift and move cases of up to 50 lb.
- Overnight / pre-dawn hours in an active market with forklifts and pallet jacks.
Training: Structured 90-day on-the-job plan with the QC Inspectors, plus free USDA AMS, PACA Basics, and FDA Sanitary Transportation training. Promotion to QC Inspector is approved by the Vice Presidents on the QC Inspectors' recommendation.
Benefits: Union benefits through Teamsters Local 202 under the collective bargaining agreement; details are reviewed at offer.
Work authorization: Must be authorized to work in the United States. This position does not offer visa sponsorship.
