Position Snapshot

  • Position Title: Environmental Health & Safety Specialist
  • Schedule: Monday – Friday | 9AM to 5PM (occasional off-hours support during emergencies or operational needs)
  • Location: Onsite | Martinsville, VA

The Environmental Health & Safety Specialist plays a critical role in protecting our employees, our environment, and our operations. This position partners with leaders across the organization to develop, implement, and continuously improve environmental, health, and safety programs that ensure regulatory compliance while fostering a proactive safety culture. Success in this role means creating an environment where employees are empowered to work safely, risks are identified before incidents occur, and continuous improvement is embedded into daily operations.

What You'll Do

  • Develop, implement, and continuously improve environmental, health, and safety programs, policies, and procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable OSHA, EPA, federal, state, and local environmental and safety regulations.
  • Conduct workplace inspections, hazard assessments, safety audits, and compliance evaluations.
  • Lead incident investigations, root cause analyses, and corrective and preventive action initiatives.
  • Develop and deliver employee safety training, new hire orientation, and ongoing regulatory education.
  • Manage environmental compliance programs, including hazardous waste, chemical management, air emissions, stormwater, and wastewater requirements.
  • Partner with leadership to integrate safety into projects, process improvements, and daily operations.
  • Monitor key environmental and safety performance metrics while maintaining required regulatory documentation and reporting.
  • Promote employee engagement by coaching safe work practices and reinforcing a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.

What You Bring

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health & Safety, Occupational Safety, Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, or a related field preferred. Equivalent education and relevant experience may be considered.
  • Three (3) or more years of progressive environmental, health, and safety experience within manufacturing, metals processing, mining, foundry, chemical processing, or another heavy industrial environment.
  • Experience developing, implementing, and administering environmental, health, and safety programs, including conducting workplace audits, inspections, incident investigations, and employee training.
  • Experience supporting heavy industrial or metals manufacturing operations.
  • Experience leading safety culture initiatives and continuous improvement programs.
  • Strong working knowledge of OSHA regulations, hazard recognition, risk assessment, industrial safety best practices, and applicable environmental compliance requirements, including hazardous waste, chemical management, air emissions, stormwater, and wastewater regulations.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, analytical, problem-solving, and relationship-building skills, with the ability to influence safe behaviors at all levels of the organization.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) management software.
  • Professional certifications such as OSHA 30-Hour, Associate Safety Professional (ASP), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) are a plus.
