Enrichment & Training Assistant
Position Summary
Nassau Humane Society improves the lives of homeless animals in our community by providing them shelter and compassionate care. Our work focuses on adoption services, education about responsible pet ownership, and working to reduce animal overpopulation and homeless pets.
We are seeking an energetic, team focused individual for a full-time role as Enrichment & Training Assistant. This role requires confident handling of a wide variety of dog breeds and reports directly to the Enrichment & Training Manager. The ideal candidate should be in good physical condition, and comfortable working in various weather conditions. Patience, conscientiousness, and a composed demeanor are key attributes. Basic knowledge of reward based training, operant conditioning, and the purpose of canine enrichment is advantageous. In addition to these responsibilities, the full-time Enrichment & Training Assistant plays a pivotal role in fostering a positive and compassionate atmosphere for all stakeholders, including guests, staff, volunteers, and animals. Upholding exemplary customer service standards is essential in promoting a welcoming environment and ensuring the well-being of both animals and humans alike.
Position Responsibilities
· Conduct basic training sessions, including teaching commands and behavior modification techniques.
· Assist in facilitating dog play groups.
· Collaborate with staff and volunteers to organize and provide daily enrichment activities for shelter dogs and group dog walking.
· Monitor and assess dogs’ stress levels, dispositions, and temperaments to identify potential issues, and report findings to the Enrichment & Training Manager.
· Regularly update the Enrichment & Training Manager on the dogs’ behavioral progress.
· Ensure enrichment areas and materials are maintained and cleaned.
· Help and support the Animal Care Manager with simple tasks when needed.
· Other duties as assigned by the Enrichment & Training Manager or Shelter Director.
