The Nassau County District Attorney’s Office offers opportunities for immersive internship programs for the fall and spring semesters, as well as an eight-week program during the summer.
Those participating in the Summer Law Internship Program will be assigned to one of twelve major bureaus, in either our Mineola or Hempstead location, including but not limited to the District Court Trial Bureau (misdemeanors), County Court Trial Bureau (felonies), Organized Crime, Narcotics, Firearms and Gangs, Vehicular Crimes, Appeals and Public Corruption. Interns will observe the inner workings of a prosecutor's office, including witness interviews and court proceedings and whenever feasible, will assist the attorneys with all phases of prosecutions and preparing cases for grand jury presentations, hearings, trials or appeals.
Interns may also be expected to perform legal research, draft correspondence and memos, assist with file organization and case management, review, redact and compile discovery materials, and perform administrative tasks related to case preparation, including filing, copying and scanning, answering phones, scheduling meetings etc. The Summer Law Internship Program also provides interns with numerous opportunities to visit and tour other relevant law enforcement entities, including, for example, the Nassau County Correctional Facility, the Office of the Medical Examiner's ballistics, DNA, toxicology and latent print laboratory, and the Nassau County Police Department's state-of-the-art training facility. Bureau requests are strongly considered, but placements will ultimately be made based on the needs of the office. We are seeking hard working individuals who are committed to public service and have excellent research, verbal and writing skills.
All internships are voluntary, unpaid positions. However, we endeavor to support students in their applications for grants (funded by a public service entities obtained by the student), work-study funded by a college, or externships for course credit). We encourage applicants to confer with their financial aid offices and public interest career advisors for information regarding available funding for public service internships with a government agency such as the NCDA.
Our legal internship program is open to first, second and third-year law students, as well as a limited number of junior or senior undergraduate students with a demonstrated interest in criminal justice.
Legal interns who successfully complete their internship will be moved forward to a Panel Interview during their second or third year of law school for an Assistant District Attorney position.
