Position available in Family and Children's Medicaid. NC Fast experience preferred. Candidate should have strong computer and mathematical skills. Applicants without Income Maintenance Caseworker experience may be considered for a one year work-against period as an Income Maintenance Caseworker I.

The primary purpose of this position is to process Family & Children’s Medicaid recertifications and reported changes accurately and in a timely manner for recipients of Nash County Department of Social Services. The caseworker is responsible for all recertification and reported changes processing whether face-to-face, E-pass, online, mail-in/drop offs and/or via phone. The caseworker is responsible for determining continued eligibility and case maintenance for the Family and Children’s Medicaid Program for Nash County. This program’s positions are all located at the Department of Social Services. This position is responsible for interpreting and understanding policy and regulations for the MAF (Medicaid for Families), MIC (Medicaid for Infants and Children), MXP (MAGI Adult Medicaid Expansion),  MPW (Medicaid for Pregnant Women) including Presumptive Medicaid, IAS and HSF (Foster Care and Adopted Children), BCCM (Breast and Cervical Cancer), FPP (Family Planning Program, ANB (Automatic Newborns), TMA (Transitional Medicaid – income disregarded when certain criteria are met) and all SSI eligible children (age 19 and under).  This position is responsible for keying data into NC Fast in determining continued eligibility and/or changes in benefit eligibility in a timely manner. This position explains program requirements and options and refers applicants to other units and/or resources for assistance as appropriate. This caseworker is required to read and interpret Medicaid policy for all Medicaid programs including Terminal Messages, DHB Administrative Letters, Dear County Director Letters and Job Aids received from the State. This position involves decision making on difficult cases. This caseworker reports directly to the Family & Children’s Medicaid Recertification Unit Supervisor.

This position is from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Overtime may be required at times and, if needed, is worked during the week and/or weekends.



  1. This position is responsible for evaluating recipient’s continued eligibility for participation in the MAF (Medicaid for Families), MIC (Medicaid for Infants and Children), MPW (Medicaid for Pregnant Women), IAS and HSF (Foster Care and Adopted Children), BCCM (Breast and Cervical Cancer), FPP (Family Planning Program, ANB (Automatic Newborns), TMA (Transitional Medicaid – income disregarded when certain criteria are met) and all SSI eligible children (age 19 and under).
  2. The caseworker must be very knowledgeable in Family & Children’s Medicaid and must have some knowledge of other Economic Benefits programs such as Adult Medicaid, Food & Nutrition, Energy, etc. so that they can better serve our citizens by referring them to other departments as/when needed. 
  3. Attention to detail and accuracy is a must. The caseworker must be able to read and interpret Family & Children’s Medicaid policy, Terminal Messages, Dear County Director Letters, Job Aids and etc. 
  4. All recertifications and reported changes must be processed timely in accordance with State policies, procedures and timelines. 
  5. Caseworker must be energetic, enthusiastic and people-oriented. 
  6. This caseworker will be expected to work in emergency shelters and/or perform related disaster tasks and perform other reasonable tasks requested by the Deputy Director or Director.

    OTHER WORK CHARACTERISTICS


  1. Accuracy required in work: Accuracy is of the utmost importance. This position requires mental concentration at all times because of the type of work involving mandated guidelines in all Family & Children’s Medicaid Policy.  
  2.  Consequence of Errors: Close to perfection is demanded in this position. Medicaid policy requires a strict timeframe as well as adherence to guidelines. Errors in any area can be very costly both for the applicant/recipient or the County and could result in County chargebacks. 
  3. Instructions Provided to caseworker: Instructions may be written and/or oral.
  4. Guidelines, Regulations, Policies and References Used by Employee: The type of guidelines and reference sources used in making decisions and carrying out the duties of this position are program manuals, NC Fast, NC Fast Help, Terminal Messages, Dear County Director Letters, Change Notices, DMA Letters and instructions given by direct supervisor. 
  5. Supervision Received by caseworker: Supervisory sessions are conducted on an individual bases and/or as needed. The Supervisor will prepare a conference agenda and submit caseworker prior to conference if needed. In addition, there are group sessions called at the discretion of the Supervisor. 
  6. Machines, Tools, Instruments, Equipment and Materials Used: Caseworker will use telephone, fax, computer/laptop, copier, scanner, calculator or adding machine and policy manuals

Exactness and accuracy are required at all times in interpreting and disseminating policy and/or other resources. Data entry keying must be accurate; budgets and deductible calculations must be correctly computed to assure correct authorization of eligibility benefits.  Close visual attention is needed in every phase of the job. A tremendous volume of reading, and interpretation is required as well as writing. Intense mental concentration must be maintained so that errors are avoided, which could have a negative impact on the agency, State and/or applicant/recipient. Job duties constantly change due to the complexity of the Family and Children’s Medicaid programs and the ever-increasing work and caseloads. Caseworker must have the ability to work independently as well as ability to work together as a team. 

One-year experience as an Income Maintenance Caseworker I.

Salary : $42,049 - $67,715
