Performs supervisory and technical work directing the activities of emergency medical services on an assigned24 hour shift.
An employee in this class coordinates and supervises the activities of a staff of EMT Basics, Intermediates and Paramedics on an assigned 24 hour shift and insures all equipment and supplies are maintained. Work involves identifying staffing and materials needed for daily operations, and providing direct medical services in emergency situations. Responsible for scheduling personnel and finding replacements when necessary, mentoring and training employees and performing performance reviews for employees assigned to their shift; and reviewing reportsforaccuracy.Employeesarealsoresponsibleformonitoringallemergencycallsanddirectingappropriate units as required, and for making critical decisions with regards to what units are to be placed in service and prioritizing calls in high call volume, transfer and weather situations. Work involves frequent public contacts and considerable independent initiative and judgment. Work may expose the employee to human blood or body fluids and thus the job is subject to the OSHA requirements on blood borne pathogens. Work is supervised by the EMS Director and the Deputy EMS Director. Performance is evaluated through annual reviews,, results of work, staff feedback, and public feedback.

Plans, organizes and directs the activities of a staff on an assigned shift in the emergency medical services unit and ensures adequate, qualified staff to cover the shift.
Conducts daily station checks to assure equipment is readily available to respond to calls and to observe work of staff; assures all vehicles and equipment are in proper working order.
Monitors assigned shift call activity and makes critical decisions with regards to what units are to be placed in service; prioritizes services in high call volume, staffing shortages and weather situations.
Responds to calls for service in a Quick Response Vehicle; serves as a Paramedic when needed and responds to calls for service and coordinates the provision of medical services making assessments of critical problems and decides on treatments to be administered and in what sequence.
Provides information and support to other agencies including law enforcement and fire.
Evaluates performance and coaches employees; completes performance evaluations and initiates or approves disciplinary actions when appropriate; serves on panels to Interview applicants; watches for signs of stress from employees following critical incidents and recommends debriefing; Ensures proper documentation of potential Workers' Compensation claims.
Reviews reports completed by staff for accuracy and to determine concerns; assures the maintenance and completion of records, reports, and other information required for the shift.
Responds to complaints, questions, and information.

Special RequirementCertification by the State of North Carolina as a Paramedic. Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license.
