Deputy Fire Marshal - Level I
Performs specialized technical and inspections work in coordinating and participating in the County's fire service programs.
This position is responsible for performing Level I Fire Prevention Code inspections. Duties include testing suppression and alarm systems; issuing citations and permits; researching laws and ordinances related to construction and fire prevention and representing the County in court; providing fire education to the public; addressing public inquiries; and responding to emergencies as needed. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Assistant Emergency Services Director- Fire Marshal and is evaluated through observation and review of reports in terms of the overall effectiveness of applicable fire service programs.
Deputy Fire Marshal - Level II
Performs specialized technical and inspections work in coordinating and participating in the County's fire service programs.
This position is responsible for performing Level II Fire Prevention Code inspections. Duties include testing suppression and alarm systems; reviewing and approving plans for buildings under construction; issuing citations and permits; researching laws and ordinances related to construction and fire prevention and representing the County in court; providing fire education to the public; addressing public inquiries; and responding to emergencies as needed. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Assistant Emergency Services Director- Fire Marshal and is evaluated through observation and review of reports in terms of the overall effectiveness of applicable fire service programs.
Deputy Fire Marshal - Level III
Performs specialized technical and inspections work in coordinating and participating in the County's fire service programs.
This position is responsible for performing Level III Fire Prevention Code inspections to include public safety work inspecting fire suppression equipment in commercial/institutional buildings. Duties include testing suppression and alarm systems; reviewing and approving plans for buildings under construction; issuing citations and permits; researching laws and ordinances related to construction and fire prevention and representing the County in court; providing fire education to the public; addressing public inquiries; and responding to emergencies as needed. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Assistant Emergency Services Director- Fire Marshal and is evaluated through observation and review of reports in terms of the overall effectiveness of applicable fire service programs.
Essential Duties and Tasks
Deputy Fire Marshal - Level I
Enforces Fire Prevention Code on Level I occupancies, Business, Assembly (1 story, 20,000 sf), Mercantile, Residential, Storage S-2, Factory Industrial F-2, Utility and Miscellaneous, and Excluding High-rise of assigned commercial properties in the unincorporated areas of the County; prepares reports on inspection activities and maintains inspection records.
Participates in the enforcement of the County Fire Code, which involves plan review and inspections of all commercial properties in the unincorporated areas of the County; prepares reports on inspection activities and maintains inspection records.
Additional Job Duties
Assists in inspecting and conducting investigations of fires of suspicious nature or involving an injury or death to determine their cause; collects evidence, prepares documentation of all actions taken in investigations, testifies in court proceedings as required.
Maintains EMT and Firefighter certifications and responds to emergencies in these capacities when needed. Responds as on-call representative, a week at a time, working variable schedules, nights, weekends and holidays. Performs related work as required.

At least three years of fire inspection experience including one year of inspection experience with a probationary Level II fire inspection certificate on a minimum of two Level II buildings while working under the direct supervision of a certified fire inspector II or III with a supporting letter from the applicant's supervisor, or
At least two years of experience with a probationary Level II fire inspection certificate conducting fire inspections on a minimum of two Level II buildings.
Considerable knowledge of standard practices, procedures and methods involved in fire inspection, prevention and safety.
Considerable knowledge of building and fire codes and building construction.
