General Engineer, AST, Technical Management (Direct Hire)

Summary

You will serve as a Technical Management Engineer at Marshall Space Flight Center advising on, coordinating, monitoring, maintaining surveillance over, and/or performing a variety of technical managerial functions of aerospace and aeronautical research, development, design, test, and operations efforts.

• Plan, design, test, evaluate, and analyze cost for engineering or architectural projects and systems.
• Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to gather information, resolve issues, and support project activities.
• Conduct special studies that inform NASA programs, projects, and partners across technical and management areas with internal and external stakeholders.
• Prepare, deliver, and support reports, documentation, and recommendations involving program decisions, project planning, and process improvement.
• Apply engineering and scientific principles to support technical management functions and organizational objectives.
• Monitor contracted work and coordinate with engineers and partners to ensure project and technical requirements are met.
• Coordinate technical management activities including resource analysis, systems oversight, and configuration management.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Education Requirement (in the Education section below), to qualify for this position you must meet the requirements below. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work.

NASA utilizes OPM-approved qualification and rating requirements specific for Aerospace Technology (AST) positions which recognizes NASA's unique aerospace work. The specific qualifications and minimum education requirements are further described below and within the education section of the job announcement.

To qualify for GS-12, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level:

• Participating in engineering or scientific projects involving planning, design, testing, or evaluation activities;
• Supporting analysis of project data, documentation, or technical information for engineering or program functions; and
• Assisting with coordination of team activities, contractor interactions, or multi disciplinary project tasks.
  
  

To qualify for GS-13, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level:

• Performing technical management functions across multiple areas such as resources analysis, systems oversight, or configuration management;
• Conducting studies requiring interpretation of engineering or scientific principles to address project or program needs; and
• Coordinating project activities, resolving issues with partners or stakeholders, and preparing documentation supporting program decisions.

Education


Basic Education Requirement: You must have successfully completed a bachelor's degree with a major in one of the following:

• Engineering from a college or university that has ABET accredited engineering programs
• Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science, Computer Science, or other field of Science
• Social science, medical, or other fields directly related to the duties of the position.
  
  

If you did not complete a qualifying bachelor's degree, you may be eligible if you have obtained a graduate degree in an AST qualifying field, as listed above.

Degrees in engineering technology are not considered qualifying for this position.

How You May Qualify at the GS-09 Level and Above

Applicants at the GS-09 level and above who meet the basic education requirement and possess at least one year of directly related experience may be considered qualified even when their academic major or coursework is not an exact match to the specialty area of the position. In these cases, greater weight is given to the quality and level of the applicant's directly related experience.

Engineering degrees earned within the United States: Engineering degrees earned within the United States must be from a college or university that has at least one ABET accredited engineering program.
