Position Summary

The Napoleon Public Library is seeking an enthusiastic, customer-focused individual to serve as a Library Assistant Float between the Adult & Youth Services Departments. This position provides reference and circulation services, assists patrons of all ages with library resources and technology, develops and presents programs, supports collection maintenance, and promotes library services throughout the community. The Library Assistant works collaboratively with library staff and community partners to support literacy, lifelong learning, and positive library experiences for our patrons. The successful candidate will demonstrate adaptability in a dynamic public service environment and a commitment to providing free and equal access to information, resources, and services for all.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provides friendly and responsive reference and reader's advisory services.
  • Assists patrons with library technology, online resources, and digital services.
  • Assists with the maintenance of the collection, including shelving, cataloging support, processing, repair, inventory, and weeding of materials.
  • Plans, prepares, and presents programs and outreach activities.
  • Builds positive relationships with community organizations to promote library services and programs.
  • Assists in identifying community needs and recommends programs, collections, and services that support those needs.
  • Promotes library programs, collections, and services through displays, promotional materials, and community engagement.
  • Supports the mission, goals, and strategic priorities of the Library.
  • Reports to Adult Services Lead, and follows additional directions from the Director and Fiscal Officer.

Public Service

  • Models behaviors consistent with the Library's standards of excellent customer service.
  • Responds to patron questions and concerns in accordance with Library policies and procedures.
  • Maintains positive working relationships with coworkers and contributes to a collaborative team environment.
  • Communicates effectively with staff, patrons, and community members.
  • Demonstrates flexibility and willingness to assist in daily library operations as needed.

Other Duties

  • Performs opening and/or closing procedures as assigned, including securing the building, cash drawer, and equipment.
  • Develops and maintains professional, welcoming relationships with patrons.
  • Registers patrons for library cards and maintains patron records while protecting patron confidentiality.
  • Processes checkouts, returns, holds, renewals, and financial transactions accurately.
  • Assists with shelving and maintaining organized and attractive departments.
  • Performs light janitorial and housekeeping tasks to maintain a safe and welcoming environment.
  • Participates in professional development opportunities related to department services, literacy, customer service, and library operations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid driver's license for travel to outreach events, meetings, and training.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Excellent customer service, communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to prioritize work, manage multiple tasks, and meet deadlines.
  • Knowledge of literature learning resources.
  • Willingness to learn the resources and equipment to serve in both departments.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and positively with adults, youth, and community partners.
  • Ability to facilitate programs and manage group dynamics in a professional and respectful manner.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, library technology, and internet applications.
  • Willingness to learn new technologies, procedures, and library services.
  • Creativity, enthusiasm, and initiative in promoting literacy and lifelong learning.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.

Physical Demands & Working Conditions

  • Ability to operate library and office equipment.
  • Ability to lift and move library materials weighing up to 40 pounds.
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, push, pull, and lift as required throughout the workday.
  • Duties are performed both indoors and outdoors at various library and community locations.
  • Occasional evening and Saturday hours are required.

Schedule

Part-time, 24 to 28 hours per week. Flexible schedule required, including some evenings and Saturdays. Occasional participation in outreach events outside of library’s open hours.
