Job Summary

In partnership with clinical and administrative leadership, the Director Nursing Professional Development & Nurse Residency provides strategic direction and oversight for professional practice initiatives. This role ensures alignment with the American Nurses Association (ANA) Scope and Standards of Practice and the ANA Code of Ethics, fostering a professional practice environment consistent with Magnet-level expectations and the standards of the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).

The Director promotes nursing excellence, professional recognition, empowerment through Shared Decision-Making, and the ongoing professional development of nurses.

Key responsibilities in nursing education include the development and implementation of education and training plans; oversight of training programs and curriculum design; mentorship and professional support; continuous assessment and evaluation of learning outcomes; ensuring compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards; and close collaboration with nursing leadership to advance organizational goals.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Provides leadership and oversight for Professional Practice and Clinical Nursing Education initiatives in alignment with organizational strategy and nursing standards.
  • Ensures nursing practice reflects the American Nurses Association (ANA) Scope and Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics, supporting a Magnet-level professional practice environment.
  • Oversee daily departmental operations, serving as a resource and role model in resolving issues related to patient care, service delivery, safety, systems, and staff concerns.
  • Facilitates the content development and review and publication of Department of Nursing media releases, Annual Report and periodic newsletters, and Nursing Message Board.
  • Collaborates with administrative and clinical leadership to develop departmental goals, strategic plans, budgets, and operational priorities consistent with the hospital’s strategic plan.
  • Lead and facilitate Shared Governance structures and promote a culture of shared decision-making and nursing empowerment. Partner with nursing teams to support Shared Governance structures, shared decision-making, and professional empowerment.
  • Develops and implements short- and long-term educational plans based on organizational goals, regulatory requirements, quality improvement data, and identified learning needs.
  • Oversee the design, implementation, and evaluation of nursing education programs, including competency validation and skills assessment processes.
  • Assists with the collection, analysis, and reporting of professional practice, nursing-sensitive indicator, and educational outcome data to support ongoing performance improvement efforts.
  • Collaborates with Magnet leadership to support Magnet standards, including documentation of nursing excellence, preparation of narratives, and enculturation of Magnet components throughout the nursing division.
  • Provides support and guidance for professional recognition and engagement programs, including Shared Governance, DAISY, CARING, Peer Feedback, and related initiatives.
  • Serves as the designated Nurse Residency Program Director, maintaining accountability and oversight for program leadership, fiscal stewardship, educational design, development, implementation, and evaluation in accordance with ANCC Practice Transition Accreditation Program (PTAP®) standards.
  • Provides ongoing oversight of the Nurse Residency Program to ensure consistent operationalization, alignment with ANCC PTAP® standards and organizational priorities, and continuous evaluation of program quality, outcomes, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Responsible for preparation, submission, and maintenance of PTAP accreditation, including documentation, reporting, and coordination of survey.
  • Provides leadership and support for nursing education practices that align with regulatory, licensing, and accreditation requirements, including education-related policy development, competency validation, outcome monitoring, and continuous performance improvement.
  • Acts as a consultative resource to interdisciplinary teams regarding professional practice and clinical nursing education.
  • Mentors nursing staff and leaders in professional development, evidence-based practice, and shared decision-making.
  • Ensures staff receive appropriate orientation, training, and competency validation for assigned responsibilities.
  • Maintains professional knowledge and expertise through continuing education, professional involvement, and scholarly activities.

Education, Experience And Qualifications

  • Master of Science in Nursing required, Doctorate preferred.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of Demonstrated leadership experience is required, which may be gained through formal leadership roles or through leading projects, initiatives, teams, committees, workgroups, quality improvement efforts, change management activities, mentoring, precepting, or influencing outcomes across multidisciplinary teams. Candidates must exhibit the ability to motivate others, drive results, make sound decisions, manage competing priorities, and effectively communicate and collaborate with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Licensed as Registered Nurse in the State of Florida.
  • National certification in Nursing Professional Development or Nurse Leadership within 2 years of hire.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.
  • Demonstrated leadership and program management abilities required, with the ability to develop and support high-performing Nursing Professional Development teams, foster collaboration and professional growth, and effectively lead change initiatives that advance nursing education, transition-to-practice, and organizational priorities.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Practice Transition Accreditation Program (PTAP®), including Nurse Residency Program standards, accreditation requirements, program evaluation, quality outcomes, and continuous improvement. Experience supporting PTAP accreditation or reaccreditation strongly preferred.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of nursing standards of care, QA/QI concepts, external regulatory requirements, evidence of research activities, publications, and grant writing and management.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills.
  • Experience and knowledge of the ANCC Magnet and Pathway to Excellence Program.
  • Intermediate computer knowledge: Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Windows
