Job Summary
The Cardiac Device Student is an entry‑level, developmental position designed to prepare the incumbent for progression into a Cardiac Device Technician role. Under the direct supervision of cardiology clinical staff and experienced Cardiac Device Technicians, the Student will gain foundational knowledge and practical exposure to cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs), including pacemakers, implantable loop recorders, and implantable cardioverter defibrillators.
The Cardiac Device Student is required to successfully complete a formal, employer‑sponsored cardiac device training and certification program within a defined training period. Continued employment in this role is contingent upon successful completion of the training and certification program. Upon successful completion, the student will be eligible to transition into the Cardiac Device Technician position.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities

Training & Development
- Participates in structured on‑the‑job training under the direct supervision of Cardiology clinical staff and Cardiac Device Technicians.
- Completes all required coursework, clinical observations, and competency validations associated with the cardiac device training and certification program.
- Demonstrates progressive learning in the fundamentals of cardiac devices, device function, and patient care workflows.
- Observes and assists Cardiac Device Technicians with in‑office and remote device interrogations, as permitted and appropriate.
- Assists with preparation of patients for device checks, including room setup and patient education under supervision.
- Supports documentation activities in the EMR as directed, without independent interpretation or programming of devices.
- Assists with scheduling, patient follow‑up calls, and coordination of appointments related to device clinics.
- Supports remote monitoring workflows by assisting with downloading transmissions and routing information appropriately, under supervision.
- Communicate effectively with physicians, APPs, Cardiac Device Technicians, and clinical staff.
- Escalate questions, concerns, or abnormal findings immediately to supervising staff. Demonstrates professionalism, patient‑centered care, and adherence to organizational values always.
- Minimum of High School Diploma or GED.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association required within 6 months of hire/transfer.
- Advanced Life Support (ALS) certification from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association required within 6 months of hire/transfer.
- Ability and willingness to complete an employer‑designated cardiac device training and certification program.
- Basic computer skills, including EMR navigation and data entry.
- Clinical healthcare background (e.g., medical assistant, telemetry tech, cardiovascular tech) preferred.
- Prior cardiology or electrophysiology exposure preferred.
- The Cardiac Device Student must successfully complete the assigned cardiac device certification program within the designated training period.
- Failure to successfully complete the program will result in removal from the role, as the position exists solely as a pathway to the Cardiac Device Technician role.
- Upon successful completion, the employee may be transitioned into the Cardiac Device Technician position, subject to business need and performance.
