Job Overview
The Director of Music supports and enlivens the worship of Napa Valley Lutheran church by providing excellent musical leadership. The Director of Music works with the Worship Ministry Team and pastor(s) to plan meaningful worship and bring people of many ages and abilities together in making music.
Duties
*Please do not be intimidated by this list. It is necessarily detailed and all-encompassing. In practice, we believe our expectations will be managed in part-time position as there are seasons that require more time than other seasons. The position is intended to be developed and tailored to the needs of the congregation as discussed regularly with the director of music and pastor.
- Plan and coordinate the music program (choirs, instrumentalists, hymnody, special guest musicians) providing leadership and resources to our musicians
- In cooperation with pastor and worship planning team, select music for Sunday worship services, midweek worship occasions, and all special celebrations of worship
- Select music to be led by each musical group within the Music Ministry (i.e. choir, bells, band, etc.)
- Coordinate the scheduling of organists/pianists and other instrumentalists enlisted to play for Sunday morning and other worship services
- Serve as a song leader and cantor for weekly worship services as needed (unless a volunteer from the congregation is recruited for such a need)
- Hold weekly adult band and choir rehearsals during the program year, and work with vocalists/instrumentalists as needed
- Attend staff meetings as scheduled (about 2/month-6 weeks) and monthly Worship Ministry Team meeting for ongoing participation in short- and long-term planning as well as worship evaluation.
- Recruit and facilitate music ministry participation, including all age groups in our music.
- Prepare and submit information for our weekly bulletin and monthly newsletter in a timely fashion
- Work with the Worship Team to develop an annual budget that addresses the needs for new music, instrument care, and adequate musician stipends.
- Maintain the music library
- Inform the Worship Ministry Team of any instrument maintenance as needed.
- Participate with church leaders and staff in implementing congregational goals
- Maintain professional competency by attending continuing education opportunities and reading professional publications
- Positively and professionally represent Napa Valley Lutheran Church in our community
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in music, church music, or other related area preferred
- Demonstrated knowledge of, or willingness to learn, Lutheran theology, liturgical practice, and use of music in worship
- Demonstrated competency in vocal performance, vocal technique, and choral direction
- Demonstrated skill and competency at the keyboard and a working knowledge of other instruments
- Experience and competency directing, encouraging, and motivating volunteer choirs and musical groups of various ages and abilities
- Ability to work well with people of all ages, as a flexible team member, partnering with Pastors, staff members, and volunteer congregation leaders
- Openness to, enthusiasm for, and skill in a variety of styles of church music – old and new
