Job Title: Daily Substitute Teachers and Teaching Assistants (PK–12)
Reports To: Building Principal
Position Summary
Nantucket Public Schools is seeking dependable and flexible Daily Substitute Teachers and Teaching Assistants to support classrooms across grades PreK–12. Substitutes play a vital role in maintaining continuity of instruction and ensuring a safe, supportive, and engaging learning environment when regular staff are absent. This position requires adaptability, professionalism, and the ability to follow classroom routines and lesson plans at various grade levels.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Substitute Teachers
Deliver instruction based on lesson plans provided by the classroom teacher.
Manage and supervise students in a respectful, supportive classroom environment.
Provide coverage across grade levels and subject areas as assigned.
Supervise students during instructional and non-instructional times, including hallways, lunch, recess, and study periods.
Enforce and uphold district and school policies, routines, and safety procedures.
Substitute Teaching Assistants
Provide instructional and classroom support under the direction of the teacher.
Assist with small group or one-on-one instruction.
Support students with academic, behavioral, and social-emotional needs.
Supervise students during transitions, lunch, recess, or other assigned duties.
Assist with classroom organization and management.
Qualifications
High School Diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree preferred.
Experience working with children or adolescents in educational or youth settings strongly preferred.
Strong communication, interpersonal, and classroom management skills.
Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, including lesson plans.
Dependability, flexibility, and professionalism in responding to daily or short-notice assignments.
Licensure and Requirements
Current Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) Substitute License or eligibility to obtain (for Substitute Teachers).
Successful completion of CORI and SAFIS/CHRI background checks.
Compliance with all district hiring requirements and trainings.
