POSITION SUMMARY:
A high-precision tooling and machining services company is seeking a skilled Metrologist I to support advanced measurement and inspection activities within our quality department. This role is responsible for ensuring the accuracy, reliability, and integrity of dimensional data used to validate precision components and tooling.
The Metrologist I plays a critical role in supporting production through independent inspection, measurement system analysis, and continuous improvement of metrology processes. This position requires a strong foundation in measurement principles, CMM operation/programming, and interpretation of complex engineering drawings. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Advanced Measurement and Inspection
- Independently perform first-piece, in-process, and final inspections of precision-machined components and tooling
- Program, set up, and operate CMMs, vision systems, and other advanced metrology equipment
- Develop and optimize inspection programs for complex geometries and tight-tolerance parts
- Utilize precision measurement tools (micrometers, calipers, height gages, indicators, etc.) with a high degree of accuracy
- Verify measurement results and ensure repeatability and reproducibility of inspection methods
2. Measurement Systems and Data Analysis
- Analyze inspection data to identify trends, variation, and potential process concerns
- Lead or support Gauge R&R studies and measurement system analysis (MSA)
- Troubleshoot measurement discrepancies and drive resolution through root cause analysis
- Ensure integrity and traceability of all measurement data
3. Documentation and Quality Compliance
- Generate and review inspection reports, records, and Certificates of Conformance (COC)
- Manage nonconforming product, including documentation and containment actions
- Maintain and improve ISO 9001 documentation and quality system records
- Support internal and external audits, including customer and regulatory requirements
4. Cross-Functional Collaboration and Continuous Improvement
- Collaborate closely with machinists, engineers, and production teams to resolve quality issues
- Provide technical guidance on measurement methods, inspection strategies, and GD&T interpretation
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives related to inspection efficiency and quality performance
- Assist in training and mentoring less experienced quality or inspection personnel
Employee will be required to perform other duties as requested, directed, or assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED
- Minimum of 1–5 years of experience in precision inspection or metrology within a manufacturing environment
- Strong proficiency in blueprint reading and GD&T interpretation
- Hands-on experience with CMM operation and programming
- Working knowledge of ISO 9001 standards and Quality Management Systems (QMS)
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate degree in CNC machining, manufacturing technology, or related field
- Experience with metrology software (e.g., PC-DMIS, Calypso, or similar)
- Background in CNC machining, tool & die, or tight-tolerance manufacturing
- Experience leading MSA studies or supporting audit activities
- Prior experience mentoring or training team members
