Job Description
The Broadband Traveling Technician will perform installation, maintenance, and repair of fiber optic cables and service drops, installation, maintenance and repair of customer access equipment, splicing and testing fiber optic cables , installation, maintenance and repair of central office e lectronics and equipment, training and mentoring of local Broadband Technicians . Operating in a safe and proper manner as set forth in company policy and without constant direct supervision. This role also includes general and higher-level upkeep of village property and equipment, ensuring reliable internet service delivery to customers.
Weather: Indoors /Outdoors – this position requires both work in environmentally controlled environments as well as outdoors in all manner of weather . While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to severe weather conditions.
Noise level: The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate .
Description of environment: Small office spaces with standard office environment , equipment rooms with higher levels of noise and potential expos ure to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; and risk of electrical shock , customer homes and businesses, and outdoors with exposure to heat; cold; darkness; wildlife.
Physical requirements : Employee is required to frequently lift and/or move up to 50 lbs. and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 lbs. Frequently required to sit, stand, walk, use hands/fingers to handle or feel, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, talk/hear, see, taste/smell, and carry weight/lift , climb ladders and poles and work from heights.
Travel: Yes , this position will be a primarily traveling role. Must be willing and able to travel to job sites /communities which may include the use of small pla nes, boats, 4- wheelers and snow mobiles. Poten tial 2-week on/2-week off schedule.

- Priority consideration will be given to candidates located in Kotzebue, AK or Anchorage, AK. Candidates residing outside of the NANA Region will have increased travel expectations. For those based outside the state of Alaska, Anchorage, AK will serve as the official point of hire. **
- Install and terminate fiber optic cables, including aerial service drops.
- Respond to service orders and trouble tickets for new installations, troubles, upgrades, removals or changes to customer’s residential or commercial broadband services.
- Install ONT’s, fiber jacks, fiber jumpers, terminals, pedestals, splitters, protectors, modems/routers and other hardware and equipment associated with providing fiber broadband services.
- Perform splicing and testing of fiber optic cables.
- Diagnose and resolve connectivity issues in the field, utilizing test equipment and meters such as; OTDR’s, light source and power meter, Wi-Fi signal testers, etc.
- Perform regular inspections and maintenance of aerial fiber infrastructure.
- Maintain splicing equipment and tools.
- Document splicing activities and updates to system maps.
- Conduct general property upkeep, including shoveling snow, weed whacking, and cleaning.
- Perform routine office maintenance and/or repairs on equipment (such as; battery plants and generators, alarms, air filters and general fluid levels) and follow procedures for maintaining site logs and records.
- Perform higher - level maintenance and repairs on equipment and electronics as needed.
- Work with Network Operations to troubleshoot and resolve high - level network issues .
- Install and provision network equipment, wiring/ cabling , power system components including but not limited to (Calix, Ciena, Cisco, Fortinet, Routers, Switches, Battery Systems ) .
- Serve as a trainer/mentor to Broadband Technicians .
- Perform safety inspections to ensure compliance with standards.
- Ensure company inventory is maintained and reported for items utilized by technicians.
- Operate and maintain 4-wheelers and snowmobiles.
- Climb wooden poles to install and maintain aerial fiber connections.
- Respond to requests for locates of underground fiber optic cables and mark cable routes.
- Work closely with customers to ensure quality service and support.
- Use company computer programs as required .
- Adhere to safety standards and industry best practices.
- Perform all other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
- Must be able and willing to work on call during nights, weekends, and holidays.

- Proficient computer skills and the ability to adapt and learn as programs and processes change.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- 10 years experience with fiber optic installation, splicing, and troubleshooting.
- 10 years experience with aerial cable installation and safety protocols.
- 10 years experience with installation and maintenance of broadband/telecom electronics .
- 10 years experience traveling in remote Alaska in a broadband/telecom technician or similar role.
- Training/Certifications in Calix, Ciena and other broadband/telecom electronics platforms (preferred).
- Ability to operate and maintain generators, battery plants and other CO electronics.
- Ability to operate and maintain specialized equipment, including 4-wheelers and snowmobiles.
- A valid driver’s license with a clean record for the past three (3) years to be eligible under company vehicle insurance policy .
- Strong customer service and communication skills .
- Experience with training/mentoring junior technicians.
