What are the responsibilities and job description for the Assistant Vice President – Federal Regulatory Affairs position at NAMIC?
The National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies (NAMIC) has a new opportunity for an AVP – Federal Regulatory Affairs in our Federal Affairs Department. This position will contribute to the execution of NAMIC’s strategies by representing NAMIC before federal officials on issues affecting p/c insurance companies and advocate legislative and regulatory positions developed by NAMIC in all appropriate forums. This position is located in the NAMIC Washington, DC office.
Essential functions of the position include:
- Acts as a Subject Matter Expert on regulatory and legislative developments affecting the p/c insurance industry, providing appropriate strategic analysis and reporting for NAMIC publications.
- Serves as an integral part of the NAMIC Federal & Political Affairs Team to ensure comprehensive issue coverage in conjunction with all advocates.
- In coordination with the VP – Federal Counsel, manages NAMIC testimony and comment letters regarding federal regulatory, executive, and legislative proposals.
- Establishes and maintains positive relationships with federal regulatory agencies and advisory bodies to include FIO, FACI, the Federal Reserve Board, CFPB, SEC, FTC, CFTC, NHTSA, DOL, and FEMA.
- Maintains regular communications with member companies, insurance trade representatives, and other relevant stakeholder groups.
- In coordination with the VP – Federal Counsel, works with NAMIC Public Policy Team to enhance coordination between SME’s and Federal & Political Affairs advocates.
- Communicates effectively on issues through oral presentations, written articles, web content, or other relevant media.
- Provides direct advocacy coverage for legislative/regulatory entities as needed.
- Builds and maintains positive work relationships with management, staff members, and external contacts.
- Arrives to work on time and maintains a positive attendance record.
- Performs any other duties and projects as assigned.
Qualifications include:
- Minimum 5 years’ experience working on substantive public policy issues within a state or federal legislature or agency, trade association, or company.
- Experience with federal regulatory process and Administrative Procedures Act required.
- Familiarity with the property/casualty insurance industry preferred.
- Prior experience in advocacy before government organizations preferred.
- Minimum of a bachelor’s degree. Juris Doctor preferred.
- Flexibility to travel on an “as needed” basis, up to about 20 percent of the time.
- Ability to successfully pass a criminal background check and must possess an acceptable MVR.
