Job Overview
The NAMI South Central Iowa AmeriCorps VISTA will build the organization’s capacity to reduce poverty-related barriers to mental health care across 11 rural counties. By strengthening outreach, the VISTA will identify underserved communities, develop targeted strategies, and build partnerships with local organizations and schools to ensure individuals with limited resources can access free mental health education and support. The VISTA will also expand sustainable funding by researching, writing, and tracking grant proposals, helping NAMI grow programs, improve volunteer systems, and strengthen community engagement. Through these combined efforts, the VISTA will create lasting systems that increase access, remove cost and awareness barriers, and promote long-term community wellness.
Responsibilities
- Expanding NAMI South Central Iowa’s impact by identifying underserved communities and creating strategic outreach efforts that increase access to mental health support.
- Build meaningful partnerships with local organizations and schools, strengthening connections that extend NAMI’s reach across 11 counties.
- Research, develop, and write grant proposals that secure sustainable funding, while tracking progress to support long-term growth.
- Community engagement and relationship-building
- Connect residents to free mental health education, programs, and support groups.
Requirements
- Reliable transportation and ability to travel throughout the 11-county service area
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects
- Interest in mental health, community outreach, and serving rural populations
- Willingness to build partnerships with schools, nonprofits, and community organizations
- Basic computer skills (email, Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and online research)
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and work with sensitive information
- Strong organization and attention to detail for tracking outreach and grant activities
- Commitment to a full-year AmeriCorps VISTA service term
