As the statewide organization of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, we provide free education programs, peer‑led support groups, and specialized initiatives—including the Young Adult Connection Community (YACC) and Vital Connections Suicide Education & Support programs—designed to foster understanding, resilience, and connection.
We deliver mental health awareness training, stigma‑reduction initiatives, trauma‑informed community presentations, and advocacy for equitable, accessible mental health care. Serving all eight counties across Connecticut, our programs are offered both in-person and virtually to ensure accessibility and inclusivity for all. Role Description
Location: Hybrid (Local Area)
Position Type: Volunteer with Honorarium
Schedule: Up to 8 hours per month (2 hours per week)
Training: Mandatory Pre‑Training on June 6–7
NAMI Connecticut is seeking compassionate and committed individuals to serve as Peer‑to‑Peer Program Leaders. In this hybrid volunteer role, you will co‑teach an 8‑session educational program for adults living with mental health conditions. Using NAMI’s structured, evidence‑based curriculum, you will guide participants in building skills, confidence, and community. Leaders are required to teach the 8‑session course a minimum of twice per year.
Program topics include:
- Mental health recovery strategies
- Goal setting and personal empowerment
- Relaxation and stress‑reduction techniques
- Communication and interpersonal skills
- Partnering effectively with healthcare providers
Responsibilities
- Co‑teach NAMI’s 8‑session Peer‑to‑Peer course using established curriculum
- Foster a supportive, inclusive, and recovery‑oriented environment
- Facilitate group discussions with empathy and respect
- Collaborate with a co‑leader to deliver engaging, organized sessions
- Attend all required training, including the 10‑hour instructor pre‑training (June 6–7)
Qualifications
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to engage diverse participants in a group setting
- Empathy, active listening, and a commitment to mental health advocacy
- Lived experience with mental health recovery or prior peer-support involvement strongly preferred
- Experience delivering training or education (a plus, not required)
- Flexibility to manage a hybrid schedule and coordinate with a co‑leader
- Willingness to complete all required NAMI training
