Used Car Reconditioning Technician

We're one of the biggest independent used car dealerships in the area — and we're building something bigger. As we grow, the people here now are the ones who'll grow with us and eventually run their own crew.

Right now, reconditioning is done by one person. Every car that gets fixed, checked, cleaned, and made ready for sale runs through that seat — that person is you. It's a real responsibility, but it's a manageable one; we're not moving 50 cars a month.

If you're a mechanic who takes pride in finishing what you start, and you have the ability and desire to get involved in other aspects of reconditioning like detailing, we want to talk to you.

Required: You must have your own mechanic tools, including a diagnostic scan tool. This isn't negotiable — it's how you'll do the job from day one.

What We Actually Need

This isn't a detailing job — but cleanliness still matters. Every car you repair also needs to be cleaned and ready to show, so pride in a clean finish counts alongside the wrench work. The hard part — the part we're hiring for — is noticing and diagnosing real mechanical issues so a car is actually ready to sell, not just ready to look sold.

You don't need to be a master technician. Most of what comes through the shop is routine — brakes, oil changes, standard wear-and-tear repairs. Anything major — engine or transmission work, or anything outside what our shop is equipped to handle — gets sent out. What we need is someone who can catch and correctly diagnose the issues that come in, and take ownership of the ones within your wheelhouse from start to finish.

Here's what that means day to day:

• Diagnose and repair routine mechanical issues on incoming inventory — brakes, oil changes, standard wear-and-tear, and check-engine issues straight from auction
• Recognize when a repair is outside our shop's scope (major engine/transmission work) and flag it to be sent out
• Follow our inspection checklist completely, every time, even when you're busy — no skipped steps, no “close enough”
• Clean and prep every vehicle you repair so it's actually ready to show, not just mechanically sound
• Own the reconditioning process from start to finish on every vehicle assigned to you
• Help out with general shop and lot duties when needed — moving cars, lot cleanup, occasional detailing support

We need someone well-rounded. You won't just turn wrenches — you'll be part of keeping the whole lot running.

What Matters Most to Us

The most common reason this position doesn't work out is work getting signed off before it's actually done. That's the one thing we're not willing to repeat.

We need someone who:

• Follows the process even when no one's checking behind them
• Brings their own tools — including a diagnostic scan tool — and knows how to use them
• Takes ownership: if something's not finished, you say so, you don't let it slide

You don't need to know everything about our specific setup on day one. You do need real, provable mechanical experience, and the discipline to not cut corners.

The Details

• Pay: $20/hr minimum, based on experience — real diagnostic/repair experience required
• Schedule: Monday–Friday, 9:00am–5:30pm, 30-minute lunch
• Tools (required): Your own full set of mechanic tools, including a diagnostic scan tool, is required to do this job. We provide the shop — a lift, air-conditioned bay, and every cleaning tool you'd need
• Benefits: Paid holidays after 6 months, PTO after 1 year
• Growth: As we grow, this role grows. Right now it's a team of one — as that changes, this person is on track to lead a recon crew, not just work in one

Who Should Apply

You don't need to have worked in a big dealership shop or carry certifications. What we need is provable, demonstrable experience: you can show us you know how to diagnose and fix a car, whether or not that came with a certificate attached.

Every job is double — sometimes triple — checked before it's signed off. That's not a lack of trust, it's the standard. There's no opportunity to cut corners without it being seen, so if that sounds stifling, this isn't the right fit. If you're confident in your work and don't mind someone confirming it, you'll do fine here.
