Position Overview
The Process Safety Engineer (PSE) is responsible for the safety, health, and
well-being of all employees and contractors at the Nalas manufacturing site.
This role requires expertise in process safety in a chemical manufacturing
environment to identify & assess risks, ensure compliance, and drive
improvements. Key responsibilities include reviewing operating procedures,
batch records, and change requests, as well as assessing new & existing
chemical processes. The PSE will support incident investigations,
environmental regulatory reporting, and adoption of new technologies to
drive safety excellence.
Qualifications
Qualified Process Safety Engineer should have a bachelor’s degree or higher in
Chemical Engineering with 5-10 years of relevant experience working in chemical
manufacturing facilities.
• CSP certification desired, or ability to attain other pertinent engineering
certifications i.e. Professional Process Safety Engineer
• Computer skills required and knowledge of Microsoft Suite/365.
• Ability to learn new software.
• Familiarity with quantitative risk assessment tools, relief device sizing, and
the design and maintenance of integrated process safety systems
• Understanding of current building codes and industrial manufacturing
standards to ensure facility-wide compliance.
• Working knowledge of environmental regulations, particularly regarding air
emissions, air permit thresholds, and TSCA compliance.
• Understanding of engineering documents such as Process Flow Diagrams,
P&IDs, and mass balance tables.
• Ability to work closely with Environmental consultants, providing the
process expertise necessary to calculate air emission estimates.
• Comprehension of all elements of OSHA PSM with ability to apply
requirements to a given chemical process.
• Experience with Lean Manufacturing & Six Sigma methodologies is preferred.
• Ability to prioritize and manage multi-functional tasks.
• Strong organizational skills and detail oriented.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Exceptional problem-solving skills.
• Must be able to work independently and as part of a team.
Primary Responsibilities
• Ensuring the safety, health and well-being of all employees and
contractors working at the Nalas manufacturing site.
• Implementing and improving the elements of OSHA PSM at the
manufacturing facility.
• Contractor safety review and oversight.
• Emergency response coordination.
• Safety review and approval of process changes following the MOC
work process.
• Conducting periodic safety inspections of manufacturing and lab
spaces.
• Assessing existing chemical processes for compliance with Operating
Procedures.
• Leading process hazard analyses (PHA) and Pre-Startup Safety
Reviews (PSSR) on new & existing processes.
• Ensure that safety and compliance actions from risk reviews are
resolved prior to manufacturing startup.
• Reviewing batch records to identify procedure deviations.
• Leading incident investigations.
• Collaborating with the Manufacturing Team to identify incident root
causes.
• Ensuring adherence to work instructions and safety practices.
• Engaging colleagues to identify & address safety risks which may arise
during inspections.
• Ensuring proper storage of raw materials.
• Inspecting manufacturing, raw material and waste storage areas for
any potential safety risks.
• Overseeing the confined space entry program.
• Performing project engineering duties such as specifying equipment,
procurement, managing installations, and commissioning.
• Coordinating contractors, leading meetings, and evaluating quotes for
various HVAC, electrical, and process improvement projects.
• Troubleshooting equipment issues and collaborating with vendors to
maintain reliability and safety.
