- Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:*The Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering (ESE) focuses on the interface between people and the environment with interdisciplinary programs in air quality, atmospheric processes, human exposure and health effects, and sustainable water resources, drawn from faculty expertise in the physical and life sciences, engineering and policy.
The Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering (ESE) is an academic and research department located in the Gillings School of Global Public Health and has about 120 graduate students.
Our education mission is to prepare graduates with an interdisciplinary outlook for relevant careers in research, teaching, or professional practice. We do so by offering an undergraduate degree (Bachelor of Science in Public Health - Environmental Health Sciences), four master’s degrees (Master of Public Health; Master of Science; Master of Science in Environmental Engineering; and Master of Science in Public Health), and the PhD. In addition, a dual master’s degree between ESE and the Department of City and Regional Planning’s MCRP degree.
- Position Summary:*The Associate Director of ESE Student Services manages, supervises and coordinates the operations of the ESE student programs such as Undergraduate and Graduate Student Buddy Program. This position manages and coordinators the BSPH ENHS Ambassador Program and will lead the development of a new Graduate Student Ambassador Program in the department.
This position works both independently and directly with the Associate Chair for Academics, ESE faculty, the SPH Registrar, and others in the school to manage ESE course scheduling (semester schedules, determining classroom needs, registration issues). The Associate Director leads the process of updating department student handbooks, Course Planning Worksheets, Canvas sites, and participates in the CEPH accreditation process.
The Associate Director of ESE Student Services develops communication strategy, design communication and marketing campaigns to create community, strengthen students’ sense of belonging, and increase transparency about department, School, and University policies, processes, procedures, and systems. This position promotes ENVRSO events and programming and leads the production of the ESE Students Weekly newsletter as well as advise the various faculty and staff members on how to best support various pathway programs including assured enrollment undergraduates, declared undergraduates, doctoral and master’s students (including Bachelor’s to MS students), and MPH students with concentrations under ESE (Environment, Climate and Health; Global Health; Health Equity and Social Justice).
The Associate Director of ESE Student Services plans student-centered events in collaboration with department program directors, including but not limited to Fall Field Day, Course Scheduling Sessions, the ENHS Juniors Welcome (Spring), and the department’s Habitat for Humanity: ESE Day of Service (Spring). This position collaborates with the Gillings Office of Student Affairs for School-wide events (e.g., orientation, open houses, admitted student day).
This position also supervises the Student Finance Coordinator, the Academic Program Services Coordinator, and Student Services Work Study students.
- Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:*Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent educational or instructional activities associated with the delivery and/or management of student support functions, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and at least 1 year of relevant experience in substitution.
