NACCO Natural Resources is seeking a senior geologist to lead the collection, organization and interpretation of geologic data as needed to build geologic models and reports. This role will plan, organize and conduct drilling programs to support marketing efforts and company mines, as needed, and prepare Mineral Resource and Mineral Reserve disclosures for various regulatory organizations.
Job Description:
Essential Duties:
- Interpret drill hole geophysical logs, lithologic logs and assays to determine the thickness, depth and volume of various geologic units
- Organize large quantities of geologic data to develop input files for geologic modeling
- Build geologic models using Vulcan, Origin or similar software
- Plan, organize and execute drill programs to support marketing efforts and company mines, including:
- Determining the number, type and location of drill and core holes needed to meet project objectives
- Developing detailed plans and cost estimates for drilling programs
- Preparing requests for proposals, evaluating contractor bids and recommending contractor selection
- Drafting and managing drilling contracts
- Lead drilling programs, including:
- Supervising drill and geophysical logging crews
- Preparing drill hole cuttings and core lithological descriptions
- Coordinating packing and shipment of core samples for laboratory analysis
- Prepare maps, cross sections, resource and reserve estimates and technical report content for mine permitting and regulatory applications
Other Duties:
- Present geologic information to company management and external stakeholders
- Investigate geologic issues and respond to information requests, as needed
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Experience in geostatistical principles and geostatistical modeling required
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel required
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, AutoCAD, ArcGIS and SQL database management desired
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with geologists, mining engineers, marketing personnel, company management, contractors and external stakeholders
- Experience modeling across multiple commodities and geological settings preferred
- Ability to serve as a Qualified Person under SK-1300 and NI 43-101 regulations
Education, Training, and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in geology or related discipline; equivalent experience may be considered
- Professional registration required, or ability to obtain professional registration within one year
- Minimum of five years of relevant experience required
Working Conditions:
Requires some travel by automobile and/or commercial airlines within the U.S. and internationally. Field work activities are sometimes conducted in extreme weather.
