What are the responsibilities and job description for the Senior Scientist, Genomic Sample Preparation Development position at Nabsys?
Nabsys is advancing genomicswith a clear focus on accessibility and innovation throughits proprietary electronic genome mapping (EGM) technology. Implemented on the OhmX Platform™, EGM integrates precision electronics, nanofluidics, and computational biology to deliver high-resolutioninsight into genome structure. This approach expands what’s possible in cytogenetics, molecular genetics, and cell and gene therapy research, while providing comprehensive structural variation analysis to laboratories of all sizes. The company was founded in 2005 and is based in Providence, Rhode Island. For more information, visit www.nabsys.com.
Position Overview: We are seeking an experienced Senior Scientist to own DNA extraction and input sample compatibility development within the Assay Development group. In this role, you will define and expand the range of application-relevant biological sample types that are compatible with our genome mapping workflow, from DNA isolation through sample preparation chemistry. You will drive this development effort end to end, coordinate closely with other Assay Development project leads, and serve as the team’s technical resource on input material and DNA extraction. This is a hands-on, bench based individual-contributor role. You will personally design, execute, and troubleshoot the experiments that drive the project in a fast-paced, cross-functional environment.
Responsibilities:
- Own and drive development projects from design to implementation, establishing and extending the baseline compatibility of application-relevant input material types with our current sample preparation chemistry
- Personally design, execute, and troubleshoot bench experiments, generating and interpreting the primary data that drives project decisions
- Optimize DNA extraction and, where necessary, sample preparation chemistry to accommodate critical sample types and improve workflow performance, reproducibility, downstream data quality, and compatibility with automation
- Evaluate a broad range of clinically and commercially relevant biospecimen types (blood, bone marrow, tissues, biobanked/biorepository specimens, etc.) across different collection, stabilization, and storage conditions, and characterize the impact of pre-analytical variables on DNA quality
- Serve as the Assay Development team’s primary technical contact for input sample type and DNA isolation questions
- Maintain current awareness of DNA extraction and isolation technologies and approaches used across long-read sequencing (e.g., PacBio HiFi, Oxford Nanopore), genome mapping, and other genomics platforms
- Perform robust data analysis (using standard statistical or software-based tools) to interpret experimental results, identify trends, and inform next steps
- Effectively communicate findings, data analysis, and recommendations to cross-functional teams and other stakeholders
- Prepare clear and concise presentations, summaries, and reports to ensure alignment between project progress and objectives
Requirements:
- PhD in biochemistry, molecular biology, or related field with 3 years of industry experience in genomics or other biotechnology field
- Strong theoretical and practical knowledge of DNA extraction and manipulation techniques using enzymatic reactions
- Hands-on experience extracting high-quality, high-molecular-weight (HMW) and ultra-high-molecular-weight (UHMW) genomic DNA (gDNA) from a variety of biologicalsource materials
- Familiarity with methodsfor assessing DNA integrity and fragment length (e.g., Qubit, TapeStation, Fragment Analyzer, Femto Pulse, pulsed-field gel electrophoresis)
- Strong desire to remain primarily bench-based, personally executing experiments while providing technical leadership
- Demonstrated experience in optimizing and troubleshooting complex biological assays.
- Demonstrated ability to drive development projects independently and coordinate work with cross-functional partners
- Experience with automated nucleic acid extraction and liquid-handling platforms (e.g., KingFisher, chemagic, Hamilton, Tecan), including an understanding of how automated processing affects DNA integrity, is a plus
- Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to multitask in a fast-paced startup environment
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required
Compensation
- Competitive salary and bonus structure
- Equity stake
- Benefits include health, dental, vision, 401(k)plan with 50% match up to 6% of base salary, unlimited vacation, life insurance
