What are the responsibilities and job description for the In Force Underwriter (UM) position at N&D Union Mutual Insurance?
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Understand Union Mutual products to sustain a stable $10,000,000 portfolio of business.
- Retain a profitable portfolio of business through the application of sound underwriting principles and creative use of underwriting resources to effectively analyze in force business.
- Provide responsive service to Union Mutual agency partners leveraging company strengths and resources as a competitive differential in the marketplace.
- Communicate directly with agency personnel, either in person, telephone, e-mail, or other written/electronic correspondence.
- Consult with supervisor, department, and Company personnel to plan, coordinate, and evaluate activities, policies and/or procedures, exchange information, consult regarding acceptable risks, investigate, and resolve problems.
- Perform key liaison functions with agents including but not limited to; obtaining updated risk information to make informed decisions and providing policy information to agents as appropriate.
- Participate in general departmental planning efforts related to assessing and improving the effectiveness of existing operating policies, procedures, and guidelines.
- Assist, as needed, in the training of Agency Personnel and /or new Underwriting employees. Assist staff with difficult or unusual problems or tasks.
- Provide excellent customer service to both internal and external customers, offering a positive experience to encourage future opportunities.
Requirements

- A Bachelor's degree (B.A.) from a college or university in an appropriate discipline is desirable.
- Three to five years related underwriting experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired.
- Working knowledge of the insurance business includes understanding risk identification and assessment, property / casualty insurance coverage, forms, financial statements, and business computer applications.
- Excellent skills in oral and written communication, time management, analysis, decision-making, problem solving, and marketing / negotiation. Also show the ability to establish a network of industry contacts.
- Candidate preferred location is within driving distance of the Montpelier, VT office. Open to fully remote or hybrid.
Desired Qualifications and Skills
- CPCU (Certified Property Casualty Underwriter), ARM, AIM, AIC, or comparable designations are encouraged.
- Licensed Insurance Agent preferable
