We’re hiring a hands‑on Crew Leader to support daily facilities operations and take on skilled work across multiple trades. If you enjoy leading teams, solving problems, and keeping a busy environment running smoothly, this role is a great fit.

Position Objective: To support the Museum mission by assuring proper maintenance and repair of Museum buildings, facilities, equipment, and grounds.

Responsibilities

  • This position is a working crew leader that assists with supervisory responsibilities for assigned crews in addition to skilled and semi-skilled assignments. Works and communicates well across all Museum teams with both staff and guests, understands implications of work, and makes recommendations for solutions and new procedures.
  • Completes complex tasks in a creative, effective, and efficient manner; independently determines methods and procedures for new assignments.
  • Trains less-skilled employees in facilities trades and preventative maintenance. Assists Facilities management in planning work, identifying staff training needs, and project management. Duties may fall into a variety of trades, including carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, emergency management, fire and life safety, and physical security systems; and performs related work as required. 
  • Identifies repair and maintenance projects requiring the assistance of contractors or vendors. Participates in estimates and evaluations of project costs as needed, and monitors work of vendors or contractors. Assists in the review of new construction or remodel plans to ensure compliance with facility maintenance standards. Coordinates work with contractors and vendors as needed.
  • Accesses and makes all levels of adjustments to computerized control systems, such as but not limited to lighting, solar, HVAC, building automation, fire safety, and security systems. Troubleshoots related system issues and report them to management or contractors for repairs as needed. 
  • Performs repairs and preventative maintenance of facilities structures and infrastructure including plumbing, electrical, hardscaping, door hardware, fire and life safety systems, drywall and painting, equipment hardware, roofing systems, and locks/keys.
  • Promptly and positively responds to customer inquiries or concerns. Provides follow-up as work is ongoing and when complete. Documents electronic recordkeeping related to preventative maintenance and repairs, and generates new work orders based on personal observations and communications from building staff.
  • Assists in the cleaning and organization of shop area. Keeps tools clean and safely operational.
  • Assists with PPE, Safety, and Tools & Equipment training of Museum staff and volunteers.
  • Under general supervision, performs skilled maintenance, repairs, and construction work in the trades to ensure that facilities are properly maintained.
  • Assists Facilities Manager with material planning and purchasing.
  • Safely fulfill and accurately document facility work orders in our computer maintenance electronic system as assigned by supervisor. 
  • Take initiative on work orders that are unassigned or open to any team member.
  • Assist leadership with the development and accountability of preventive maintenance schedules.
  • Perform maintenance & cleaning of building interiors and carpets as required – assist in completing janitorial duties and coordinating with contracted janitorial services.
  • Perform prescribed set-ups for rentals and events and ensure building systems (HVAC and lighting) are properly configured.
  • Assist Outdoor Learning Environments (OLE) personnel in grounds maintenance, including blowing, sweeping, and snow removal.
  • Assist with repair of train engine, coaches, and train track as requested.
  • Assist other departments with projects or activities as assigned or requested.
  • Oversee volunteers and/or community service workers as directed by Facilities Manager or Director.
  • Communicate well via radio and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Always adhere to Museum and OSHA safety procedures.
  • Engage with Museum visitors in a positive and helpful way to support an enjoyable and safe guest experience.
  • Prioritize the Museum’s values of inclusion and kindness in all interactions with staff, volunteers, and guests.


Job Requirements:

  • High School/Upper Secondary School Diploma or equivalent
  • Valid US state driver’s license
  • 6 years of experience in maintenance or construction related functions including mechanical, electrical, lighting, HVAC, plumbing, carpentry, painting & drywall, welding, and hardscape.
  • Strong HVAC, electrical (including 120/208/240/477v), or plumbing competency.
  • Ability to read and understand building prints, interpret simple maps and drawings, and comprehend and carry out detailed instructions, both written and oral. 
  • Ability and skill to safely operate and maintain tools, equipment, and vehicles necessary to perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.
  • Frequent use of a personal computer or other electronic device is required. Work may involve competing demands, performing multiple tasks, and working with deadlines. Tasks frequently require outside work with constant moderate to high noise levels and local travel. 
  • Tasks frequently include walking on uneven surfaces and using light equipment with occasional exposure to chemicals, gases, fumes, dust, and vibrations. Occasional use of heavy equipment, working from heights, and working in extreme temperatures. Physically able to lift or carry up to 100 lbs., walk varying terrains up to 1 mile at the time, climb ladders up to 40ft, and work outside in changing weather conditions for up to 10 hours.
  • Tasks may require constantly grasping and handling items as well as talking, hearing, and moving objects weighing over 10 pounds. Frequent standing, walking, kneeling, squatting, balancing, or reaching for extended periods of time. Frequent use of near and far visual acuity, depth perception, color discrimination, and peripheral vision. Occasionally tasks require sitting, stooping, climbing, and moving objects weighing over 50 pounds. Rarely tasks may require lifting or moving objects weighing over 100 pounds.
  • Must be able to work on-call schedule and emergencies as assigned.
  • Starting schedule is Wednesday – Saturday, 7am to 6pm with 1 hour lunch break.


Desired Qualifications

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Suite, including Word, Teams, and Outlook.
  • Trade school, 2-year technical degree, or trade license (current or expired)
  • Skill-specific certifications or technical training in HVAC, electrical, plumbing, etc.
  • Heavy Equipment operation including skid-steer, mini track loader, mini-excavator, tractor, etc.
  • Experience using power equipment including chainsaws, rotary hammers, angle grinder, etc.
  • Experience using a CMMS (eWorkOrders, Fiix, Limble, MaintainX, Zoidii, etc.).
  • Safety or first aid training (OSHA-10 Safety Training, AED/First Aid Certification, etc.)
