Senior Program Manager, Center for Netherlandish Art

Under the direction of the Van Otterloo-Weatherbie Director of the Center for Netherlandish Art (CNA), the Senior Program Manager will work with external stakeholders and internal staff across several departments to lead, develop, and implement educational programs and special events including a residential fellowship program and summer institute; forge and direct partnerships with outside organizations and institutions in the United States, and elsewhere; establish protocols and conduct evaluation of CNA programs; lead the CNA’s communication strategy, and participate in fundraising activities and donor relations.  The Senior Program Manager will help define and support overall CNA strategy and partnership development and stewardship, in collaboration with the Director. 

The successful candidate will thrive in a fast-paced environment with varied projects and responsibilities, requiring active collaboration with internal staff and clear, professional communication with donors and other external stakeholders.    

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Leads a residency fellowship program in Netherlandish art.

Activities to fulfill this function include:

  • Supervises all CNA fellows who are scholars of Netherlandish art 
    • 2 full-time employees currently
    • 1 short-term affiliate for 2 to 8 weeks
  • Defines goals and approaches of the program
  • Provides guidance on fellows’ research projects and scholarship
  • Approves each fellow’s use of research travel budget
  • Responsible for program design and implementation
  • Responsible for recruitment strategy
  • Craft descriptions and submit staffing requisitions annually
  • Recruit through advertisements and outreach to universities
  • Manage evaluation and selection process; including internal and external evaluators
  • Devise key performance indicators and metrics for evaluation of fellowship program
  • Develop and manage internal mentoring program including identification of mentors, drafting standards and protocols for mentors and mentees, and establishing calendar for mentoring activities.
  • Develop and implement CNA Colloquium, an annual event that shares fellows’ research with non-MFA audiences. The Colloquium may include external participants alongside CNA fellow presentations.

Senior Program Manager would lead and execute all elements of the above function.

2. Leads a biennial summer research institute for PhD students and emerging professionals in pre-modern Netherlandish art, in partnership with the Rijksmuseum, RKD – National Institute of Art History, and Harvard Art Museums. 

 Activities to fulfill this function include:

  • Coordinate curriculum committee, made up of senior representatives of each partner institution
  • Lead program committee, made up of representatives of each partner institution
  • Oversee program budget
  • Through the program committee, draft curriculum for the program
  • Identify and recruit instructors, using personal professional contacts
  • Define candidate profiles
  • Devise process for selection of participants
  • Manage selection of participants
  • Develop, implement, and manage content and logistics for execution of the program
  • All of the above requires experience organizing and running a related type of program as well as specialized knowledge of pre-modern Netherlandish art and its historiographies. 

Senior Program Manager will direct this initiative and implement the above activities.

3. Leads communications strategy for the CNA

Activities to fulfill this function include:

  • Oversee CNA newsletter
  • Create vision for CNA presence on mfa.org, including regular content updates and blog entries
  • Develop inputs towards CNA content across MFA channels, and information for posting CNA opportunities on targeted external sites.
  • Work closely with Marketing, Communications, and Creative departments to insure successful delivery of CNA messages and news of activities across a range of platforms.

Senior Program Manager will direct this initiative and implement the above activities.

4. Alongside the CNA director, works with university and museum partners as well as internal staff across the institution to develop educational and scholarly programs and events that relate to the mission of the CNA including symposia, lectures, and seminars for a range of audiences.

  • Identify educational and scholarly programs and draft action plan for actualizing them.
  • Act as a liaison to encourage new LCE programming related to Dutch & Flemish art across audience segments.
  • Manage logistics alongside MFA program staff for all events including space identification, transportation, lodging, catering, and marketing, in collaboration with the CNA Coordinator.

Requires deep knowledge of activities and priorities of different constituencies within the international academic community, especially in Belgium and the Netherlands; significant experience with platforms and opportunities for educational and scholarly engagement; significant professional network that can be utilized to enhance program components; and  possession of sufficient academic credentials and experiences with Netherlandish art created between 1500 and 1800 in order to be recognized as a viable partner by academics with advanced degrees.

Other duties include:

  • Help define and support overall CNA strategy and partnership development and stewardship, in collaboration with Director.
  • Participate in fundraising, especially for programs she leads, as assigned.
  • Make formal presentations, give conference papers, and write material for publication to advance the profile of the CNA, and the Senior Program Manager.
  • Represent the CNA during events and at panels and conferences to share opportunities and best practices in the field.
  • Represent the CNA during public-facing opportunities.

Perform other related duties as required or directed.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • M.A. with a specialization in an area of 15th-18th century Netherlandish art required. Ph.D. strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years Curatorial, Education, or Academic experience, including work with varied constituents such as donors, museum staff, students, and academic faculty.
  • Experience teaching Netherlandish art at the college level.
  • Strong organizational abilities, attention to detail, and follow-through skills.
  • Excellent writing and management skills.
  • Professional demeanor and interpersonal skills.
  • Proven ability to handle multiple tasks fluidly and efficiently in a demanding, fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential materials with professionalism.
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically, solve problems, make decisions, work independently and as a team player.
  • Experience in event planning preferred. 
  • Experience working with Dutch and/or Flemish museums and universities strongly preferred.


SALARY RANGE:

Full-time Salary, 35 hours per week

Starting Salary: $82,000 - $86,985
