Position Overview:

Reporting to the Senior Director of Marketing and Communications, the Internal Communications Manager will be responsible for fostering connections among staff and Board across the MFA. The position will lead and manage a transparent, consistent, and integrated communications infrastructure that connects the Museum’s workforce—from frontline staff to hybrid administrative teams and the Director’s Office.

This position will work collaboratively with Marketing and Communications colleagues to create a culture of true alignment and institutional listening. By establishing predictable channels, high-quality content standards, and structured feedback loops, this position will ensure that every member of the Museum community feels informed, valued, and connected to shared strategic priorities. 

The Internal Communications Manager is a collaborative communicator who thrives on turning complex organizational goals into engaging narratives and reliable systems.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Ensure timely, accurate and consistent flow of information across the Museum, keeping the MFA community informed about news, policies, exhibitions, priorities, and organizational changes. 
  • Create an annual internal communication strategy and roadmap encompassing staff meetings, town halls, Director “office hours,” newsletters, Board communications, and People and Culture (P&C) programs .
  • Develop guidelines for Intranet postings, staff directory updates, and all staff emails and announcements.
  • In collaboration with Marketing and Communications, implement a centralized system for distributing information, supported by clear processes; reinforce a communications cascade for breaking news that includes both internal and external audiences. 
  • Collaborate with governance colleagues on Board communications, including sharing the monthly staff newsletter, consistent updates and Museum highlights.
  • Establish monthly cross-functional meetings (Internal Comms, Governance, PR, P&C, Director’s Office) to review upcoming messages and ensure alignment.
  • Reinforce the Museum’s mission, values and strategic priorities while cultivating unity across the MFA.
  • Promote two-way communication and institutional listening through structured opportunities that allow for feedback, questions, and responses that meaningfully inform planning and decision-making.
  • Use sentiment surveys, analytics, and qualitative feedback to refine communication tactics.
  • Explore mobile friendly platforms (e.g., Teams) for staff without workstation access.
  • Formalize workflows for content updates, approvals, and maintenance of internal channels.
  • Other duties as assigned or required.


Requirements and Characteristics:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, or a related field.
  • 3-5 years of communications experience, with a proven track record of managing multi-channel platforms (Intranet, newsletters, etc.).
  • Previous experience working within a museum or nonprofit environment is highly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience navigating communications strategy within a setting that includes hybrid, onsite, and frontline staff.
  • Experience acting as a strategic partner to leadership, providing guidance on tone, content and sequencing.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and manage relationships across all Museum departments, including the Director’s Office, P&C, IT, and Curatorial.
  • Proficiency in platforms like Microsoft Teams and SharePoint for real-time collaboration and knowledge management.
  • Basic to intermediate skills in graphic design and video editing (e.g., Canva, Adobe Creative Suite) to produce engaging, visual updates.
  • A well-rounded communication with excellent presentation skills

Salary and Schedule:

Full Time Salary, $80,000 - $85,000

This position is affiliated with the United Auto Worker's Union
