What are the responsibilities and job description for the Assistant Conservator, Objects position at Museum of Fine Arts?

Under the general direction of the Head of Objects Conservation:

Participate in all aspects of care of the Museum’s important collections of American and European art objects, with a focus on silver, decorative arts, and modern materials; provide conservation support for a robust program of exhibitions and installations, both onsite and at external venues domestic and international, as well as gallery renovations and capital projects; and actively contribute to the MFA’s public outreach initiatives.

 

Essential Functions:

• Under the direction of supervising conservator, execute appropriate conservation treatments to a high degree of excellence.

• Make recommendations on treatment, handling, and installation.

• Prepare condition reports for loans and exhibitions.

• Prioritize and carry out necessary conservation treatments.

• Carry out research in support of treatments as needed.

• Work collaboratively with curators, conservators, scientists, registrars, and collections care staff.

• Fully document all work in writing and through photography, in accordance with departmental standards in the collections database system (TMS).

• Perform all work in accordance with AIC Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Practice.

• Courier artwork as necessary, both nationally and internationally.

• Manage personal workflow to meet established deadlines.

• Participate in public engagement and outreach activities in the Conservation Center. 

• Perform additional tasks in support of conservation activities as needed.

 

Qualifications:

• Applicants must have a Master’s degree in objects conservation from a recognized conservation training program, or equivalent experience.

• Applicants must have at least two years of museum-based post-training conservation experience.

• Demonstrated practical experience in conservation and care of decorative arts, silver, metalwork, and modern materials. Familiarity with a wide range of materials is also beneficial.

• Excellent written, photo documentation, and communication skills.

• Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.

• Ability to work in an environment with multiple and competing deadlines, and to manage workload on multiple projects without compromising focus and attention.

• Experience with digital photography, Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft Office, and museum databases.

 

Salary Range:

Full-Time Salary, 35 hours per week

Salary: $65,975

This position is affiliated with the United Auto Workers Union.
