Position Overview

Within the Department of Interpretation and under the direction of the Director of Interpretation, the Interpretive Specialist, Table of Voices oversees the administration and implementation of Table of Voices and supports interpretation projects. The Specialist will work closely with colleagues including in Community Engagement and Partnerships, Public Programs, Curatorial, Design, and Marketing and Communications to embed outside perspectives into the Museum’s exhibitions, collection displays, programs, and interpretive strategies.



Essential Functions

Manage all day-to-day operation and inquiries to the Table of Voices program

Manage all administrative aspects of Table of Voices including: processing payments for all Table of Voices participants; event logistics; program agendas; coordinating with internal stakeholders to design meeting activities.

Design and facilitate all Table of Voices convenings and events

With Table of Voices Council, recruit all participants for all Table of Voices projects teams and serve as the primary point of contact for Table of Voices Council members and project team members.

Implement existing platforms for engagement with external individuals (such as roundtables, focus groups, etc.) while developing new modes of interaction as appropriate for each project.

As assigned, serve as a member of the content team for Table of Voices related exhibitions, helping to manage the development of specific interpretive strategies based on the conversations during Table of Voices.

In collaboration with Community Engagement and Partnerships team, initiate, develop, and maintain a wide network of relationships with community-based organizations and individuals with a focus on identifying collaborative relationships and partnerships.

As appropriate, conduct site visits to external organizations and groups as representative of the MFA and Table of Voices Program.

Secondary Functions

Stay abreast of developments in the fields of community engagement for art museums; art museum interpretation; and evaluation through readings, contacts with colleagues at other institutions; and occasional benchmarking travel conferences

Serve on Department and Museum-wide teams as requested

Perform other duties as or directed

Requirements And Characteristics

  • Bachelors’ degree required; Master’s degree preferred
  • 3-5 years comparable experience within a complex organization working with diverse stakeholders. Museum experience preferred.
  • Ability to interact and collaborate with diverse community groups, in terms of age, economic status, and cultural background
  • Must be a supportive ally in support of the Museum’s efforts and commitment to Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access (IDEA) values.
  • Superior written and oral communication and interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to lead consensus-building with diverse groups.
  • Strong research skills; experience editing and proofreading.
  • A collaborative style with demonstrated experience exercising diplomacy and facilitating complex communications.
  • Excellent presentation and facilitation training preferred.
  • Strong project management experience.
  • Self-starter with flexibility mindset and a desire to experiment and build systems.
  • Able to work occasional evenings and weekends for internal or external commitments

Salary And Schedule

  • Full Time Salary, $65,000 - $68,000
  • This is a two-year term position, scheduled to end two years from date of hire
  • This position is affiliated with the United Auto Worker’s Union
