The Museum at Eldridge Street is housed in the Eldridge Street Synagogue, a magnificent National Historic Landmark that has been meticulously restored. Opened in 1887, the synagogue is the first great house of worship built in America by Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe. Today, it is the only remaining marker of the great wave of Jewish migration to the Lower East Side open to a broad public who wish to visit Jewish New York. Exhibits, tours, cultural events and educational programs tell the story of Jewish immigrant life, explore architecture and historic preservation, inspire reflection on cultural continuity, and foster collaboration and exchange between people of all faiths, heritages, and interests.
Role Description
The Museum at Eldridge Streets seeks an experienced, visionary leader to serve as Deputy Director for Organizational Advancement-a senior executive responsible for operational, programmatic, and organizational health of the institution. Reporting to the President/CEO this is a hands-on leadership role that requires equal parts strategic thinking and day to day execution.
Essential functions include:
- Translate strategic goals into actionable plans
- Identify emerging opportunities in audiences, partnerships, funding, and programming
- Supervise direct reports across Visitor Experience, Public Programs, Marketing, Education, and Facilities
- Monitor departmental budgets and track revenue against targets
- Build relationships with the Chinatown and Lower East Side Community
Qualifications
- Master’s degree or equivalent experience in Museum Studies, Arts Administration, Nonprofit Management, Historic Preservation, or a related field
- 7-10 years of management experience in a museum, cultural nonprofit, or historic site
- Strong operational and organizational skills
- Experience supervising staff and managing HR processes
- Familiarity with budget oversight and program management
- Knowledge of Jewish culture, New York City history, and cultural heritage is a plus
Salary Range: $90,000 to $140,000, commensurate with experience
