Director of Facilities and Sustainability (Regular, Full-Time)

Facility Engineering

Reporting to the Senior Vice President, Site Operations, the Director of Facilities and Sustainability provides strategic leadership for the planning, operation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of the museum's physical campus while advancing sustainability initiatives that support the museum's mission. This position oversees building operations, engineering, maintenance, utilities, custodial services, grounds, facility services, sustainability programs, environmental compliance, and facility-related capital projects to ensure a safe, resilient, efficient, and welcoming environment for visitors, staff, volunteers, and the museum's collections. Working collaboratively across departments, the Director ensures that all building systems support world-class exhibitions, collection stewardship, educational programming, public events, and administrative operations, and align with the museum's long-term strategic goals.

Responsibilities:

Facility Operations

• Directs the operation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of buildings, grounds, infrastructure, and building systems.

• Develops and implements preventive and predictive maintenance programs.

• Ensures compliance with applicable building codes, environmental regulations, life safety requirements, and occupational safety standards.

• Leads facility condition assessments and develops long-range maintenance and renewal plans.

• Ensures environmental conditions for collection preservation in collaboration with Conservation and Collection teams.

• Monitors building performance and operational efficiencies, generating reports for forecasting and future planning.

• Oversight of off-site facilities operations in collaboration with LACMA departments operating at off-site locations. 

• Works closely with the Manager and Director of Capital Planning and Construction on projects.

• Establishes service standards and performance metrics for facility operations.

• Manages facility service contracts, vendor relationships, and contractor performance.

• Oversees facilities budgets, operating expenses, and resource allocation.

Building System and Asset Management

• Maintains a comprehensive asset management and lifecycle replacement plan. 

• Utilizes computerized work order, asset, and preventative maintenance programs to manage the overall building and system maintenance program.

• Monitors utility consumption and building performance analytics.

• Recommends investments that improve operational efficiency and reduce lifecycle costs.

Regulatory Compliance and Risk Management

• Ensures compliance with all applicable federal, state, county, and local regulations, including, but not limited to: OSHA, CAL/OSHA, Fire Code, ADA, Environmental Regulations, Air Quality Standards, Hazard Materials Management.

• Leads facility inspections and regulatory audits.

• Maintains emergency building systems and safety equipment.

• Supports organizational emergency preparedness and business continuity planning.

Sustainability Management

• In collaboration with senior management and cross-departmental colleagues, develops and executes organizational sustainability strategies, goals, and performance metrics.

• Facilitates and leads the cross-departmental Sustainability Steering Committee. 

• Leads initiatives focused on energy conservation, waste reduction, water management, carbon reduction, and sustainable procurement.

• Monitors sustainability performance and prepares reports and recommendations for leadership and stakeholders' review and input.

• Identifies and pursues sustainability certifications, grants, and funding opportunities.

• Collaborates across departments to integrate sustainability into daily operations and organizational planning.

• Promotes environmental stewardship and employee engagement programs.

• Participates in LA County committee meetings and programs as requested or required.

Budget and Financial Management

• Develops and administers operating and infrastructure budgets, including budget trackers.

• Provides quarterly and year-end budget status reports.

• Forecasts long-term facility system, equipment, and building repair investments and improvement needs and makes priority recommendations.

• Monitors and approves expenditures and identifies cost-saving opportunities.

• Negotiates and administers facility-related contracts and service agreements.

• Ensures budget, invoice, and service agreement processes are prepared at the start of the fiscal year and consistently managed throughout the year.

Operational Support and Leadership

• Participates in strategic planning and organizational initiatives supporting institutional events, exhibitions, public programs, and special events.

• Establishes departmental goals, performance measures, and operational priorities.

• Develops policies, procedures, and best practices supporting facility operations and sustainability objectives.

• Prepares reports, presentations, and recommendations for senior leadership.

• Provides leadership, coaching, and professional development for facilities staff.

Benefits: 

• The expected annual salary for this Los Angeles, CA-based position is $160,000.00- $170,000.00, subject to change, and the position is eligible for LACMA’s comprehensive benefits package, including pension plan.

Qualifications: 

• Bachelor’s degree in Facilities Management, Engineering, Environmental Sustainability, Business Administration, or related field required. Master’s degree preferred.

• Minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible experience in facilities management, sustainability, museum or campus operations, or related field.

• Minimum of 5 years of leadership or management experience.

• Experience managing projects, facility operations, and vendor contracts.

• Experience developing and implementing sustainability programs and initiatives.

• Experience supporting complex events, public venues, cultural institutions, campuses, or similar environments preferred. 

• Strong knowledge of building systems, facility operations, and maintenance practices, and project management.

• Knowledge of sustainability frameworks, environmental regulations, and emergency management practices. 

• Understanding of event logistics, operational planning, and venue management.

• Strong financial management and budgeting skills.

• Excellent project management and organizational abilities.

• Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a dynamic environment.

• Strong interpersonal communication and stakeholder management skills.

• Proficiency with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS), building management systems, Google Workspace, and Microsoft Office applications.
