MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education – Completion of a program or training for Surgery Technicians is required.
Experience – A minimum of three (3) years of current surgical technologist experience is required.
Licenses & Certification – Certified Surgical Technologist required. Valid CPR certifications are required.
Knowledge & Skills –
- Knowledge of cleaning and sterilizing techniques utilized in an operating room.
- Knowledge of health record procedures and hospital ambulatory clinic procedures.
- Knowledge of medical terminology and abbreviations.
- Ability to work closely with highly skilled operating room nurses and surgeons in pressure situations.
- Ability to communicate courteously and effectively with patients and their families when needed regarding surgical procedures and after care procedures.
- Knowledge of a wide range of surgical case types including DaVinci Robotics, Uro-Gyn, Urology, General, Orthopedics, ENT, and other specialties as indicated.
- Ability to mentor and assist in training new surgical technologists and students.
JOB SUMMARY
The purpose of the position is to provide skilled surgical technician assistance to the operating room personnel of the surgeon of record for assigned cases at the Muscogee Nation Hospitals.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed in a clinical and/or hospital environment. There is common exposure to contagious disease. The work may include a certain amount of exposure to hostile and emotionally disturbed patients, families and visitors. Special attire may be required as protection against infection.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Long periods of standing and walking. Working with patients requires recurring bending, lifting, squatting, stretching and positioning of patients. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds. Must manage stress under many different circumstances.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Satisfactory job performance will be determined by successful execution of the following:
Assists in the mentoring and precepting of new surgical technologists and students.
Acts as first scrub at all times, unless mentoring/precepting. Ability to scrub all cases on any given day.
Scrub complex cases without instruction from supervisor or mentor.
Place equipment and supplies in the operating room and arrange instruments according to instructions.
Assist team members in placing and positioning of patients on the table for surgical procedures.
Scrub arms and hands thoroughly and don gown and gloves.
Aid the team in dressing for surgical procedures in gowns and gloves.
Maintain the supply of fluids such as plasma, saline, blood and glucose for use during operating procedures.
Hand instruments and supplies to the surgeon, hold retractors, cut sutures and perform tasks as directed by the surgeon during the operation.
Place dressing on the patients following the surgery.
Count sponges, needles and instruments before and after the operation.
Wash and sterilize equipment, using germicides and sterilizers.
Clean the operating room thoroughly following surgeries.
Processes, prepares and distributes a complete range of clean and sterile medical supplies, instruments and equipment.
Disassembles, decontaminates and cleans items brought to Central Sterile from nursing units. Checks for workability, reports breakages and defective items and initiates work orders.
Reassembles emergency and routine trays, surgical instruments, and monitoring devices. Packages and wraps items, inserts sterile control indicators, labels packages and determines the method of sterilization.
Load, unloads, and operates autoclave and other equipment used in sanitizing and sterilizing medical equipment and supplies, including antiseptic and cold disinfectant solutions. Assures adequate sterilization has taken place by checking autoclave tapes, internal indicators, steam pressure and timing devices. Routinely conducts testing of autoclave efficiency.
Checks supplies into unit, places items for proper storage in shelves and supply rooms. Determines adequate supply, maintains records of stock levels, inventories stock periodically, recommends revisions in levels and/or substitute stock. Notifies supervisor of shortages. Assists with ordering as needed.
Routinely distributes medical supply items, sterile and unsterile to the in-patient and out-patient areas on an established quota basis. Issues limited supplies and equipment from central supply on request.
Maintains a safe, sanitary environment in the department. Performs housekeeping duties as assigned.
Provides a minimum of four (4) annual in-services to cohorts for continued education, staff member will research and present on current issues in the operating room environment.
Responsible for ensuring all supplies in department are rotated and within expiration dates.
Regular attendance is required.
Attendance at a minimum of 75% of staff meetings required.
Performs other duties as assigned.
