MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education – Incumbent must hold a current license as a RN in good standing with the State of Oklahoma.

Experience – (RN) One year of relevant Emergency Room or ICU experience is preferred.

Licenses & Certification –Must possess a current licensure by the State of Oklahoma or National Council of State Boards of Nursing for Registered Nurse. Current BLS, ACLS, or PALS certification or obtain within 60 days of hire. TNCC and NIHSS certification is required within the first year of employment. ESI certification within the first 60 days of employment.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Professional knowledge of nursing care principles, TQM ethics, practices and processes required to assess nursing needs of assigned patients.
  • Knowledge of a wide variety of medical disorders, normal course of diseases, potential complications and individual therapeutic interventions.
  • Knowledge of pharmaceuticals, their desired effects, side effects and complications of their use.
  • Ability to recognize and react to emergency situations.
  • Knowledge and skill in operation and monitoring of general nursing equipment, e.g. infusion pumps, defibrillators, arrhythmia monitors, etc.
  • Ability to develop, implement and evaluate a patient care plan to meet the need of assigned patients.
  • The ability to respond quickly and accurately to changes in patient and or unit conditions.

JOB SUMMARY

Nurses care for people who are sick, injured, convalescent or disabled. Under general supervision, they deliver care to patients utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, intervention, implementation, and evaluation, in accordance with established philosophy. Nurses collaborate with other professional disciplines to ensure effective patient care delivery and achievement of desired patient outcomes. Nurses effectively

Interact with patient and significant others, while maintaining the standard of professional nursing. ER Nurses provide care for patients from various types of illness or trauma requiring emergency attention and must be able to recognize and effectively treat life-threatening conditions.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Because patients need round-the-clock care, working hours include days, nights, weekends and holidays. Nurses spend considerable time walking, bending, stretching and standing, so they must follow proper body mechanics to guard against injury. Because of the fast-paced and variable environment of emergency rooms, ER Nurses must possess good stress coping skills and be able to relate to people of all ages and backgrounds. They must be able to work accurately around frequent interruptions. Nurses may face hazards from exposure to chemicals and infectious diseases. In addition, they treat patients that may be confused, irrational, agitated, and/or uncooperative.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Work in a non-ambulatory health care setting requires considerable walking between workstations and patient care areas. Work requires regular and recurring bending, stooping, stretching, and lifting of patients or similar activities. Incumbent must be able to lift at least 50 pounds. Position also requires ability to cope with constant changes in a stress-laden environment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Satisfactory job performance will be determined by successful execution of the following:

  • Collects current symptoms, as well as a detailed patient history and then consults and coordinates with health care team members to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care plans.
  • Performs triage, while considering both physical and psychosocial elements.
  • Records patients’ current vital signs.
  • Records all care information concisely, accurately and completely, in a timely manner, in the appropriate format and on the appropriate forms.
  • Provides for emotional support, physical comforts, and safety of patients. Assists with all activities of daily living and personal care needs.
  • Observes, records, and reports signs, symptoms and responses of patient change in condition or reaction to treatments to the appropriate persons.
  • Performs simple lab tests such as stool checks for blood and finger stick blood sugars.
  • Performs and supervises nursing procedures such as tube feedings, dressing changes, treatment of wounds, inserting of urinary catheters, irrigations, and applications of heat and cold therapy to extremities.
  • Prepares and administers prescribed medications (oral, topical, intramuscular, subcutaneous and intravenously). Observes for physical and emotional contraindications to the medications administered. Prepares and administers therapeutic treatments prescribed for the patient.
  • Provides first-aid and emergency care as well as provides for resuscitation procedures in cardiac and/or respiratory arrest as well as assisting with disaster measures as needed.
  • Shares responsibility in ensuring that the hospital has adequate supplies and equipment, a safe environment is maintained, and general upkeep of the facility is done on a continual basis.
  • Initiates patient education plans, as prescribed by physician. Teaches patients and significant others, how to manage their illness/injury, by explaining: post-treatment home care needs, diet/nutrition/exercise programs, self-administration of medication and rehabilitation, as well as provides referrals to other healthcare professionals for follow-up treatment.
  • Attends at least 75% of department staff meetings.
  • Regular attendance is required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Float among various clinical services, where qualified and competent.
