Job Description

The Department of Surgery at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) is seeking a Trauma and Acute Care Surgeon at the late Assistant or Associate Professor level to serve in a unique leadership role as the Physician Lead of an established Hospital-Based Violence Intervention Program (HVIP).

The Turning the Tide Violence Intervention Program (https://muschealth.org/medical-services/emergency/trauma/turning-the-tide) began in 2021, and is nationally recognized for its service to patients, research, innovation and leadership. This position offers an exceptional opportunity for academic advancement, meaningful community impact, and leadership in a multidisciplinary initiative aimed at reducing violence-related trauma through intervention, advocacy, and long-term support.

Position Requirements/Details

  • Board Certified or Board Eligible in General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care
  • Eligible for medical licensure in South Carolina
  • Minimum of 3 years post-fellowship clinical experience
  • Demonstrated interest in trauma surgery, public health, and violence prevention
  • Experience with or strong interest in grant writing and program development
  • Academic experience and interest in research or community-engaged scholarship
  • Leadership experience or demonstrated potential for leadership in programmatic or clinical roles

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide clinical leadership and strategic direction for the HVIP in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team
  • Partner with community-based organizations to develop and implement evidence-based violence prevention strategies
  • Lead and contribute to grant writing efforts to secure ongoing program funding
  • Support program evaluation, data collection, and research related to outcomes and impact
  • Serve as a mentor and educator to trainees interested in public health, trauma, and community-engaged care
