What are the responsibilities and job description for the Optical Technician position at Murray Hill Optical?
We are seeking a reliable, fast-learning, and patient-focused Optical Technician to join our growing team at Murray Hill Optical. This role is a great opportunity for someone who wants to expand their experience in both clinical and retail sides of the optical field. From pre-testing and patient care to assisting in optical and front desk duties — you’ll gain hands-on experience in all aspects of a modern, high-end optometry practice.
What You’ll Do:
Pretesting & Diagnostics
- Conduct visual acuity, color vision, depth perception, and eye muscle movement tests
- Perform auto-refraction, tonometry (eye pressure), and visual field testing
- Assist with ocular motility, and other preliminary screenings
- Record patient medical history and prep charts for exams
Clinical Support & Patient Care
- Explain procedures to patients and answer questions before their exams
- Assist with contact lens insertion/removal training and care instructions
- Prepare exam rooms and maintain sterile, organized equipment
- Sterilize and set up tools for minor in-office procedures or laser treatments
Front Desk & Flow Management
- Greet patients, schedule appointments, answer phones, and route inquiries involving insurance benefits
- Direct patient flow efficiently and professionally
- Support in patient check-in and follow-ups as needed
Optical Assistance (A Plus!)
- Help patients select frames and lenses suited to their prescription and style
- Measure and adjust eyewear for a proper fit
- Use lensometers and frame measurement tools
- Maintain and restock inventory
Who You Are:
- Fast learner with a can-do attitude and strong communication skills
- Detail-oriented with the ability to work independently or as part of a team
- Prior experience in optometry, ophthalmology, retail optical, or customer service preferred (but not required — we’ll train the right person!)
- Ability to inhale knowledge quickly and apply it effectively
- Comfortable with computers, and learning clinical tools
- Friendly, organized, and motivated to grow in the optical field
