What are the responsibilities and job description for the Fabrication Designer (Rhino + CNC, Build Focused) position at Murmuration Inc?
About Us:
We design and fabricate custom installations, sculptures, and immersive environments for brands, events, and film.
Our work combines 3D modeling, CNC/CAM, fabrication, and real-world problem solving. Everything we design gets built - this is a hands-on shop, not a purely digital role.

***Applicants must include a portfolio showing both design and real-world builds.***
The Role:
We’re looking for a technical designer / fabricator hybrid who can take a concept and turn it into something buildable.
You’ll help define how projects get built - including materials, structure, and fabrication approach, not just execute drawings.
This is not an entry-level role and not for purely digital designers.
Project timelines are typically 2-4 week build times.
What You’ll Do:
- 3D modeling in Rhino with real-world constraints
- Break designs into CNC-ready files, cut lists, and assemblies
- Produce clear, efficient shop drawings
- Work hands-on with wood, metal, plastics, and mixed materials
- Assist with fabrication, assembly, and installs
- Collaborate to solve real-world build challenges
Requirements:
You should have most of the following:
- Hands-on shop experience (wood, metal, scenic, or fabrication)
- Strong material knowledge (plywood, framing, plastics, metals, etc.)
- 3D modeling in Rhino or similar CAD used for real-world builds
- Experience preparing files for CNC / laser / plasma
- Ability to think through how something actually gets built
- Comfortable moving between computer and shop floor
Not a Fit If You Are:
- A render-focused or purely digital 3D artist
- Entry-level with no real build experience
- Lacking hands-on fabrication background
Bonus Skills:
- CNC router operation
- Welding / metal fabrication
- Scenic / installation experience
Pay: $25.00 - $35.00 per hour
Work Location: In person
Salary : $25 - $35
