Credentials: High school diploma or GED.
Other Qualifications: The person in this position must be a safe driver; have or be able to quickly learn custodial skills; and must get along well with people. The courier is responsible for delivering mail and supplies to 12 schools, 4 pre-schools, City Hall, and other places as assigned on a daily basis. This person must have a happy helpful attitude; be punctual and dependable; be able to read, write and follow directions. This person must also be of good moral character; be well groomed and courteous; be confidential and demonstrate efficient work habits. Experience with delivery may be helpful but not required. This employee must possess a valid driver's license and provide own transportation. This person must have the necessary ability to abruptly change tasks and maintain composure in stressful situations. The employee is subject to a post offer physical examination with a written statement from the physician showing a satisfactory health record and stating the employee is free of any contagious or communicable disease in such form as might endanger the health of school children. All employees hired after January 1, 2000 are required (post offer and prior to commencement of the employment duties) to supply fingerprint samples which are submitted to a criminal history records check conducted by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. All hiring decisions are contingent upon satisfactory criminal background check results.
Physical Demands: The employee must have sufficient physical strength and the ability to independently lift, move and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds and to move and carry objects weighing more than 100 pounds with assistance. The employee will be exposed to extreme temperatures, inclement weather, smells associated with children and educational institutions. The employee must be able to operate light equipment, including but not limited to dollies, 4 wheeler, and forklifts.
Essential Job Functions: The person in this position serves as a courier for the Board of Education including a daily route to each school, frequent trips to City Hall and other business locations. Other job functions include:
- Open and secure the Central Office as per schedule.
- Raise and lower American flag as appropriate at the Central Office Building.
- Prepare initial supply of office coffee each morning.
- Clear path to main entrance on snow days.
- Inspect and keep building and grounds clean, clean warehouse and connecting hallway.
- Replace consumable items.
- Clean and check equipment and report needed repairs to the Director of Maintenance.
- Report vehicle or building maintenance needs to the Administrative Assistant to the Director.
- Pick up and deliver mail for the Central Office.
- Deliver supplies and materials to schools.
- Serve as courier for the Central Office.
- Check kitchen and building at the end of each workday to help ensure that electrical appliances are turned off when appropriate.
- Observe all safety rules.
- Take mail to the Post Office at the end of each workday.
- Deliver packets to Board members as assigned.
- Make purchases at local businesses as approved by the Administrative Assistant.
Staff Relationship: Reports directly to the Assistant Superintendent of School Operations.
Terms of Employment: Twelve (12) months, 22 hours a week at an hourly rate set annually. Non-Exempt.
