What are the responsibilities and job description for the Art Camp Instructor position at Munroe Center for the Arts?
SUMMER CAMP INSTRUCTOR
JOB DESCRIPTION
2022
The MCA camp philosophy is to provide inspirational, high quality arts programming in a setting where participants feel welcomed and safe. Kids should have fun, and want to be here.
Campers arrive and are greeted by counselors and volunteers with waiting games, and then move into a day led by counselors and volunteers between different classrooms of arts activities (classrooms may be inside or outside). Counselors also oversee campers as they eat their lunch, while the teachers take a break for a half hour. Then counselors break for lunch while teachers oversee the campers during recess.
Instructors will have camper groups rotate in and out through the day, with an hour to do an arts project. Campers are grouped by age, and weeks are defined by a theme. Instructors are expected to create lesson plans that are developmentally appropriate for the age groups and inspired by the weekly theme. Activities are meant to be ones that campers would not necessarily do at home, but in a setting where staff is available to help guide them.
While the main task of Instructors is to lead arts activities in their specified area, they are also expected to oversee camper safety. They will be supported by counselors and the Summer Camp Manager.
All summer camp staff are expected to participate in an orientation before camp starts (during an afternoon to be announced later). This orientation reviews basic rules for staff as well as campers, reviews a typical day’s schedule, and allows new and old staff to discuss tips and tricks for how to make the camp day a good one. This is also a time where MCA staff will review policies such as bullying, discipline, and emergencies.
Camp instructors are expected to arrive each day (M-F) that they are scheduled to work at 8:30am until 3:00pm, and will be supervised by the MCA Summer Camp Manager. We will also have an Assistant Camp Manager who will work as a Counselor while also helping the Camp Manager and other counselors.
