This position is represented by the International Union of Operating Engineers - Local 302 and is subject to the provisions of the current agreement between the Municipality of Anchorage and the International Union of Operating Engineers - Local 302.
DEPARTMENT: Solid Waste Services
HOURS OF WORK: 4 x 10's - Schedule to be determined
LOCATION: Anchorage Regional Landfill - 15500 Eagle River Loop. Eagle River / Central Transfer Station - 1208 East 56th Ave, Anchorage

This is a Seasonal position, which will last approximately six (6) months from the date of hire.

Employees who are hired or rehired to any position shall be placed at the entrance pay step, and advancement from the entrance step to the maximum step within a pay grade shall be by successive steps.

To be considered for employment, applicants must be legally authorized to work and accept employment in the United States. The Municipality of Anchorage is not able to provide any type of sponsorship, including Student Visas and Employment Visas, under any circumstances.

Applicants shall be referred and considered for this position in the order as follows per the Collective Bargaining Agreement:

  • Internal applicants currently working under the Operating Engineers - Local 302 Collective Bargaining Agreement
  • Local union dispatched applicants
  • External applicants and other current Municipal employees not covered under this agreement
Operate heavy equipment at the Central Transfer Station and the Anchorage Regional Landfill such as, but not limited to, loaders, dozers, articulating dump trucks, landfill compactors, graders, solid waste cranes, water trucks, leachate tractor/trailers and transfer tractor/trailers. Must be able to lift and carry 50 pounds. Perform other duties as assigned. 

High school diploma, GED, or equivalent and three (3) years of experience in the operation of solid waste transfer and disposal facilities.

OR

High school diploma, GED, or equivalent and three (3) years of experience in a related field, which includes the skilled operation of heavy motorized construction equipment, including at least two (2) of the following types: tractor trailers/tankers, front-end loaders, landfill compactors, bulldozers, graders, dump trucks, cherry pickers and backhoes.

AND

Must possess and/or obtain a valid State of Alaska Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with tanker endorsement, and a Hazardous materials endorsement, no airbrake or transmission restrictions. Applicants with a restriction of "L-Vehicles Without Air Brake Systems Only" and “E-Automatic Transmission Vehicles Only” are not eligible.

All applicants must possess and/or obtain:

  • A valid State of Alaska Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with tanker endorsement, no airbrake or transmission restrictions, and satisfactory driving record at time hire. Applicants with a restriction of "L-Vehicles Without Air Brake Systems Only" and “E-Automatic Transmission Vehicles Only” are not eligible.

  • A satisfactory drug screening at time of hire.

  • Satisfactory background check which includes criminal, education, and employment history at time of hire.

If selected for hire, the appointment in this position will be conditional based upon a satisfactory Municipal Employment Office conducted Background Check. A Background Check encompasses criminal history, verifying education, and verifying dates of employment.

As a condition of employment, the person selected will be required to required to successfully complete a drug test prior to beginning work and will be subject to future periodic drug and alcohol tests on a random basis without advance notice.

If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon the submission of a current copy of the Alaska Commercial Driver's License, and a current (dated within 30 days from date requested) copy of his/her Department of Motor Vehicle driving record, including a driving record from previous states, if the Alaska Driver's License was first issued within one year prior to application, documenting an acceptable driving history. All required certifications and/or licenses must remain current for the duration of employment.


Military Service Interview Preference

Veterans who wish to be considered for interview preference, as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D, must attach to the application a copy of their DD Form 214, DD Form 256, NGB Form 22, or a letter from the US Department of Veterans Affairs, recognizing the person as a veteran. The attached documentation must show an honorable discharge or general (under honorable conditions) discharge. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.

Individuals currently serving as a member in good standing in the National Guard or the organized military reserves who wish to be considered for interview preference, as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D, must attach proof of current service to the application. Proof of current service can be shown by submission of a statement of service which, at a minimum, shows the full name, date of birth, Social Security Number, date service began, branch of service, rank, name of command providing the information, and unit of assignment. The statement of service must be on a form or letterhead of the individual’s command organization, and shows the name, signature, title, and contact information of the signer providing the statement of service. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.
