The Multnomah County Department of Community Services, Transportation Division is looking for a full-time Construction Inspector - Bridges (Engineering Technician 3)!

As an Engineering Technician 3 with the Multnomah County Transportation Division, you will work primarily as a construction inspector in partnership with County Project Managers in the delivery of capital improvement projects on the County’s six Willamette River bridges (Sellwood, Hawthorne, Morrison, Burnside, Broadway, and Wapato).

You will be ensuring that the complex, challenging work to rehabilitate and enhance our transportation infrastructure is done correctly and efficiently, and at the highest quality possible. You will work on the electrical, mechanical, and structural rehabilitation of very large movable bridges, and help bring transformative roadway projects into being.

You will work on teams that solve critical, difficult construction challenges, and ensure that the hired Contractor executes the work in accordance with the agreed on plans. At times you will lead the other project inspectors, assigning work and scheduling them to ensure adequate inspection coverage. Many of these projects are funded with federal dollars, which require extensive attention to detail and documentation. You will work in a highly flexible, team-oriented environment and will need to have exceptional communication, analytical and organizational skills.

Your Main Duties Will Include

  • Perform construction inspection of bridge and/or road projects, which may include reinforced concrete and structural steel installation, shop fabrication, paint, surveys, grading, surfacing, drainage and others;
  • Keep construction inspection records and prepare reports; lead the project quality and quantity documentation and closeout process;
  • Mentor and coach less experienced staff;
  • Coordinate and schedule day-to-day inspections, facilitate communication between the parties involved in the delivery of capital projects including County staff, consultant engineers, and construction contractors;
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on construction standards, practices, laws and regulations;
  • Review project plans and specifications;
  • Plan and administer multiple smaller projects or parts of a larger project;
  • Coordinate project safety and quality assurance functions; and
  • Assist in developing standards and procedures.

To Qualify

Minimum Qualifications/Transferable Skills*:

  • Equivalent to an Associate degree from an accredited college with major course work in engineering, surveying technology, construction management, or related field (In lieu of a degree, we will consider equivalent years of qualifying training and/or experience)
  • Three (3) to six (6) years of increasingly responsible experience in public works bridge and roadway construction inspection
  • Valid driver license

  • Federal-aid Project Inspection and Documentation
  • Supervision/Coordination of staff
  • Bridge Construction Inspection
  • ODOT Certification in Bridge Inspection, General Inspection

Additional Information

Type of Position: This hourly, union-represented position is eligible for overtime.

Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM. There may be some flexibility with the regular start and end times.

Location: Multnomah County Bridge Shop (1403 SE Water Ave, Portland, OR 97214)

Telework Type: Ad-hoc telework - there may be opportunities for some work tasks to be performed from home on an ad-hoc basis, but this position is expected to perform the majority of their work from the County location above or from the field.
