The Concrete Finisher / Working Foreman is responsible for leading field operations while actively performing all phases of concrete placement, finishing, and curing. This role ensures work is executed in accordance with project specifications, industry standards, and safety regulations, while maintaining productivity, quality control, and crew performance on-site.
Key Responsibilities
1. Concrete Placement & Finishing Operations
- Perform and oversee all aspects of concrete placement, consolidation, screeding, floating, and troweling for slabs-on-grade, sidewalks, curbs, driveways, and structural elements.
- Establish proper grades, elevations, and slopes in accordance with plans and specifications.
- Execute finishing techniques including hand trowel, power trowel, broom finish, exposed aggregate, stamped, and decorative concrete applications.
- Monitor set times, bleed water, and curing conditions to ensure proper finishing sequence and prevent defects.
- Apply curing methods and compounds, sealers, and surface hardeners per manufacturer and project requirements.
- Verify surface tolerances, flatness, and levelness (FF/FL where applicable).
2. Field Leadership & Crew Management
- Supervise and coordinate a crew of finishers, laborers, and apprentices in daily operations.
- Assign work based on production goals, crew strengths, and project schedule.
- Lead by example as a working foreman, actively participating in placement and finishing activities.
- Provide hands-on training in PROPER-FINISHING techniques, tool use, and safety practices.
- Enforce company policies, jobsite safety requirements, and productivity expectations.
3. Project Coordination
- Collaborate with Project Managers, Superintendents, and other trades to ensure proper sequencing and workflow.
- Review and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and scope requirements prior to and during work activities.
- Coordinate concrete deliveries, pump operations, and placement logistics to maintain continuous workflow.
- Ensure proper formwork readiness, subgrade preparation, reinforcement placement, and embed installation prior to pour.
4. Quality Assurance & Control
- Ensure all work complies with project specifications, ACI standards, and local building codes.
- Inspect and verify subgrade, forms, reinforcement, and concrete placement conditions prior to and during pours.
- Identify and correct surface defects such as honeycombing, scaling, cracking, or improper finish.
- Maintain consistent quality in joint layout, edging, and finishing details.
- Complete punch list items and ensure proper project closeout of concrete scopes.
5. Safety & Compliance
- Enforce compliance with OSHA regulations, company safety policies, and site-specific safety plans.
- Conduct daily Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) and toolbox talks as required.
- Ensure proper use of PPE, fall protection, and equipment safety procedures.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free work environment.
6. Problem Solving & Field Adjustments
- Troubleshoot issues related to concrete mix design, slump, weather conditions, and finishing timing.
- Address field challenges including equipment failures, schedule conflicts, and manpower adjustments.
- Make real-time decisions to maintain production while protecting quality and safety standards.
Qualifications
Experience
- Minimum 10 years of hands-on concrete finishing experience.
- Minimum 2 years in a supervisory or foreman role on commercial or civil projects.
- Strong working knowledge of ACI practices, finishing standards, and placement procedures.
- Proven ability to read and interpret blueprints, grade stakes, and layout information.
Skills & Competencies
- Strong leadership, communication, and crew management abilities.
- High level of craftsmanship and attention to detail.
- Ability to manage production under tight schedules and changing site conditions.
- Proficiency with finishing tools, power trowels, screeds, lasers, and layout equipment.
- Solid understanding of construction sequencing and multi-trade coordination.
Certifications (Preferred)
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 Certification
- First Aid / CPR Certification
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift, carry, and handle materials up to 50 lbs
- Ability to stand, bend, kneel, and work in physically demanding conditions for extended periods
- Ability to work in varying weather conditions including heat, cold, and precipitation
