Building BEST Mentor

Reports To: District BEST Coordinator

Job Goal: The purpose of the position is to provide structured, professional mentoring that supports new teachers in strengthening instructional practice, understanding professional and instructional expectations, preparing for the district evaluation process, reflecting on feedback, and identifying areas for continued professional growth. The role is supportive and developmental and is separate from the building administrator's supervisory and evaluate responsibilities.

Required Qualifications:

• Hold a valid Washington State teaching certificate appropriate to their current assignment.
• Be currently employed as a certificated teacher within the District.
• Demonstrate effective instructional and classroom management practices.
• Demonstrate strong communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
• Demonstrate professionalism, reliability, discretion, and sound judgment.
• Have a working knowledge of district instructional expectations, the teacher evaluation framework, and building and district procedures.
• Demonstrate a willingness and ability to support colleagues in a positive, constructive, and confidential manner

Performance Responsibilities:

• Serve as the primary building-level professional mentor for eligible BEST mentees assigned within the building.
• Establish regular check-ins with assigned teachers, particularly during the beginning of the school year, with additional attention during the beginning of the year and other high-need times.
• Support mentees in strengthening instructional practice, classroom management, assessment practices, and other areas of professional growth.
• Help mentees understand district instructional expectations and the teacher evaluation framework.
• Support mentees in preparing for observations and evaluation conferences, including identifying evidence of effective practice and reflecting on professional goals.
• Help mentees reflect on feedback received through the evaluation process and identify appropriate areas for continued professional growth.
• Provide opportunities for collaborative planning, problem-solving, reflection, and professional conversation.
• Coordinate with assigned Peer Mentor(s) so that structured professional mentoring and day-to-day peer support complement rather than duplicate one another.
• Help connect mentees with appropriate curriculum, instructional resources, professional learning, district supports, or thier expertise when needed.
• Maintain appropriate confidentiality regarding mentoring conversations and relationships.
• Communicate with the Building Principal and District BEST Coordinator regarding general mentorship needs, resources, or program concerns while maintaining the confidential and non-evaluative nature of the mentoring relationship.
• Participate in district BEST mentor meetings, orientation activities, professional learning, or training as requested.
• Collaborate with Building Mentor Coordinators from other district buildings, as appropriate, to support consistency, share resources, and strengthen the district BEST program.
• Provide feedback to the District BEST Coordinator regarding mentee needs, program effectiveness, and additional supports or professional learning that may be beneficial.
• Perform other mentorship-related duties consistent with the purpose of the position.

Role Boundaries:

• The Building BEST Mentor Coordinator does not evaluate, supervise, or formally assess the performance of a mentee.
• The mentor may help a mentee understand and prepare for the evaluation process but does not participate in the administrator's evaluation of the teacher.
• Day-to-day building routines, procedures, systems, and practical questions are primarily supported by the assigned Peer Mentor, with the Building Mentor Coordinator providing additional guidance when appropriate.

Terms of Employment:

• $1,000 annual stipend
• One position per building when eligible BEST mentees are assigned to the building.
• Position is for one year and is determined annually based on program need.
• Assignment is subject to District hiring/posting procedures and available program funding.
