AREA:                 School Nurse 

 

REPORTS TO:     Building Principals and Director of Student Services

 

SUPERVISOR:     Director of Student Services, Principal

SUMMARY OF ASSIGNMENT: 

Provide school nurse services.  Identifies and treats health needs among students and provides instruction in the maintenance of good health and disease prevention.  All duties are to be undertaken in alignment with the District’s Strategic Plan, putting the safety, health, and well-being of students at the forefront of all actions and decisions. 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Registered Nurse License

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Registered Nurse with school or public health experience
  • CPR instructor credentials.
  • Ability to write business correspondence.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of written or oral instructions.
  • Ability to handle stressful situations.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding both employment and student matters.
  • Ability to effectively manage time and responsibilities.

 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES (including but not limited to):

This role operates independently to lead district-wide health programs, combining clinical expertise with administrative oversight and community advocacy.

CLINICAL CARE AND SPECIALIZED SCREENINGS

  • Direct Treatment: Provides emergency care, first aid, and medication administration in alignment with medical and administrative protocols.
  • Advanced Screenings: Coordinates and executes mandated health screenings, including vision and hearing, and maintains detailed records for every student.
  • Clinical Referrals: Evaluates student health and issues formal recommendations to primary care physicians and external resources to ensure continuity of care.
  • Case Management: Performs periodic assessments and planning for students with exceptional needs, including Section 504 compliance.

PUBLIC HEALTH AND POLICY IMPLEMENTATION

  • Communicable Disease Control: Implements board policies regarding the exclusion and readmission of students to manage infectious diseases effectively.
  • Immunization & Prevention: Promotes and assists in district-wide immunization programs and the development of preventative health services.
  • Sanitary Standards: Partners with school personnel to monitor the environment, ensuring the maintenance of sanitary and safety standards.

STRATEGIC LEADERSHIP AND ADMINISTRATION

  • Program Development: Collaborates with administration to formulate health objectives, standards, and school facility planning conducive to student well-being.
  • Compliance & Documentation: Facilitates the completion of all Federal/State mandated paperwork and maintains a high level of accuracy in health records.
  • Autonomous Oversight: Manages the school health program with limited supervision, providing leadership to the broader school health team.

CONSULTATION AND COMMUNITY OUTREACH

  • Educational Resource: Acts as a consultant to faculty for health curriculum and provides wellness instruction to various community groups.
  • Liaison Services: Bridges the gap between home, school, and community; conducts home visits to interpret health needs and utilize local resources.

A variety of electronic and technology devices, copier, telephone/voice mail, fax; a variety of health care equipment.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works inside, but some duties will be performed outside, including recess, field trips, etc. The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints. The employee frequently will work irregular or extended hours while performing the duties of this job. The employee is directly responsible for the safety, well-being, and work output of students. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, walk, and stand; twist at neck and waist; kneel. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee is required to be able to hear conversations in quiet environments. May be required to lift or move up to 20 pounds. 

 

MENTAL/MOTOR DEMANDS:

 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee rarely performs routine work. The employee frequently exercises flexibility (ability to shift from one task to another). Guidance and reinforcement are usually available. The employee frequently works within time constraints and maintains attentiveness intensity. The employee is frequently involved in social interactions which require oral and written communications. The physical demands, work-environment characteristics, and mental/motor demands described within this job description are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

 

School year working days as set by the Board of Trustees.  Salary, benefits and other working conditions as negotiated by the WEA and as assigned by the Administration.

Performance of said duties will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's Policy on Evaluation of Profes­sional Personnel.
