Youth Development Activity Trainee -MTMO

Responsible for coordination of age appropriate activities that focus on leadership, life skills, and sensitive topic awareness and supervision of youth that utilize the program on-site and off-site. At completion of the 90-day learning period, the Activity Trainee must be able to demonstrate the responsibilities as outlined under “Additional Requirements”.

• Supervises youth participants; provides youth participants with positive support, guidance, and training/development opportunities in coordination with both on-site or off-site youth activities and/or field trips.
• Uses motivational techniques to encourage teamwork, cooperation, self-esteem, self-confidence, decision making, problem solving of participants; establishes achievable goals and objectives with participants.
• Provides a safe environment for youth by checking condition of facilities and equipment used; examines playground equipment prior to play for unexpected hazards; provides basic first-aid or contacts emergency services for severe injuries; keeps youth information sheet easily accessible for emergency contact information and/or existing medical conditions information.
• Researches and present activities to Supervisor for monthly schedule development. Activities may include using a variety of techniques, including lectures, projects, exhibits, audiovisual and library resources, computers, and the internet. Activities encourages are to be focused on leadership, self-confidence, self-empowerment, self-respect, alcohol/drug prevention, other sensitive awareness or prevention topics; and other positive, healthy life-style topics.
• Enforces and educates YDP Youth Code of Conduct. Provides instruction and monitors youth participants; maintains order during activities/games by counseling youth with behavioral challenges; documents and reports interactions; recommends disciplinary action as needed.
• Reports any problems with youth behavior, parent behavior, or staff to Supervisor via incident report; reports and documents serious incidents (child abuse, sexual abuse, etc.) to Supervisor and when necessary involves appropriate authorities (911, MCFS, etc.).
• Because of the Tribe’s commitment to community service and the well-being of its members, each employee may be expected to perform a wide range of office and field duties from time to time. Such duties may or may not be related to their regular responsibilities.
  
  
  

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

• At completion of 90-day learning period, the Activity Trainee must be able to demonstrate the following
• Understanding of child safety.
• Effectively monitoring and supervising children onsite or offsite.
• Planning an activity, with follow-through to lead an activity with a small group of 9-15 youths.
• Daily rotations.
• Opening and closing duties and expectations.
• Daily paperwork reading and completing van logs, sign-in, drop-off/pick-up hourly.
• Driving the vans. Knowledge of van safety when driving with or without children in the vehicle (must complete Eversafe driving course within 90-days of hire date).
• Off-site field trip procedures.
• Conducting drop offs.
• Provide informal redirecting of minor behavior situations.
• YDP Staff and participant Code of Conduct.
• Clear understanding of cell phone and social media policies for YDP. Expectations while working with youth and per the MIT GPP’s, in a professional environment around MIT employees or events.
• Work place professionalism practice good hygiene, uniform worn at all times while on duty, interaction with supervisors and co-workers, and attitude.
• T.A.R.S. certification or training related to Child Development must be obtained within 90-days of hire date.
• CPR/First Aide Certification must be obtained within 90-days of hire date.
• Basic computer skills.
  
  
  

Required Must be an enrolled Muckleshoot Tribal Member. High school diploma or GED equivalent. One (1) year experience in supervising youth and coordinating activities for youth.

Preferred Experience working with Native Americans and/or within a Tribal community.

Skilled in Supervisory techniques and practices to include managing, scheduling, assigning, coordinating, and monitoring work of others; motivational techniques; communicating effectively verbally and in writing; listening effectively; observing reactions/interactions of others; problem-solving; conflict resolution; evaluating options and implementing solutions; using a computer and standard office equipment.

Knowledge of Mathematics; the English language including composition and grammar; methods of teaching and instruction for individuals and groups; laws and government regulations; human behavior and performance; learning and motivation; Native American culture and history; drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Ability to Maintain confidentiality; maintain a positive attitude and work ethic; effectively communicate information and ideas, both written and verbal; comprehend information, both written and verbal; form culturally competent, non-judgmental, supportive and empowering relationships with youth; gather and interpret data, reach logical conclusions, and present findings and recommendations; use independent judgment.

The working conditions described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential duties of this class. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, balance, bend at the waist, crouch, kneel, twist, use foot controls, and operate a motor vehicle. The employee must frequently lift carry and/or push/pull up to twenty pounds (20 lbs.). The employee is frequently required to sit, talk, or hear. The employee is frequently required to use hands to grasp, finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance, and peripheral vision and the ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately loud. Frequently works in outdoor weather conditions. Occasionally may sit to perform administrative tasks.

A current and valid Washington State driver’s license, CPR/First Aid certificate, and Food Handlers permit.
