What are the responsibilities and job description for the Paralegal II position at Muckleshoot Indian Tribe?

Under the general supervision of the Chief Legal Counsel or Prosecutor or Senior Paralegal/Trainer, provides support in handling cases and preparing for hearings, trails, and meetings. Performs administrative and clerical tasks, as well as legal research. Maintains case files and drafts legal documents.

  • Provide independent paralegal and administrative assistance to the Prosecutor - as well as department staff.
  • Perform many aspects of criminal, civil and ICW case preparation and facilitate the necessary steps to open/close case files, initiate/respond with other agencies, departments, courts, and parties; and enter/retrieve both prior and current case status and statistical information via departmental database.
  • Coordinate the filing of court orders and other various documents and their distribution to the appropriate parties.
  • Draft memos, reports, forms, correspondence, pleadings, court orders, and other documents.
  • Assist prosecutor in preparing for court and prepare case files for upcoming court dockets.
  • Maintain a close working relationship with the court clerks.
  • Review, organize, and maintain case documents and files, as well as department archives - both on and off-site.
  • Submit timely notification of case dispositions to referring law enforcement agencies.
  • Facilitate discovery requests for defendants and/or opposing counsel.
  • Maintain statistics and compile data for reports as directed.
  • Periodically attend and be familiar with the Court hearing process.
  • Photocopy, fax, scan, answer telephones, take messages, handle mail and e-mail and perform other general office functions as needed.
  • Perform departmental functions and special projects as directed.
  • Because of the Tribe’s commitment to community service and the well-being of its members, each employee may be expected to perform a wide range of office and field duties from time to time. Such duties may or may not be related to their regular responsibilities.


Required

Graduation from an accredited two-year legal assistant or paralegal certification program, with two years or more of relevant experiences is desired.

Tribal and Indian Preference shall be given. The desired qualifications may be adjusted taking into account work experience and education equivalency when considering an Indian or Tribal member applicant.

Skilled in

Keyboarding, analysis and problem solving. Computer software applications relative to the position including electronic filing systems tools; Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and internet research tools; WebEx or similar teleconferencing tools. Basic accounting and mathematics skills. Conflict resolution techniques. Operation of standard office equipment that may include computer, copier, scanner, fax machines and multi-line telephone. Legal specific information, terminology and/or equipment. Principles and practices of supervision.

Excellent Verbal and written communication. Organization, work prioritization and time management. Customer service - in person and via telephone (discretion, patience, etiquette, professionalism). Excellent interpersonal and human relations skills. Following oral and written instructions; anticipate changes as appropriate. Working independently, and adapting to changes in work load demands. Providing training and coaching to subordinate staff. Evaluating employees and disciplining as appropriate. Following through on assignments as directed. Conducting research on specific work assignments as directed.

Knowledge

Familiarity with federal and tribal court systems and service of process requirements. General office policies, principles and practices. Rules, regulations, codes, laws, policies, procedures and ordinances related to the Office of the Tribal Attorney.

Ability

Prioritize workload. Work with different personality types. Maintain strict confidentiality of sensitive matters.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to walk or climb a ladder; use hands to operate, finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 35 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately quiet.
