What are the responsibilities and job description for the Elders Advocate position at Muckleshoot Indian Tribe?

Under the direction of the Director of Tribal Member Advocacy, the Elders Advocate serves as a dedicated liaison and support resource for Muckleshoot Tribal Elders, ensuring their voices are heard and their rights are upheld. This role involves advocating for the health, safety and well-being of elders, providing information on available services, assisting with access to care, and addressing concerns related to neglect and abuse. The Elders Advocate works closely with families, caregivers and various internal and external programs to promote independence and quality of life. Strong communication, empathy and problem-solving skills are essential for success in this role.

  • Conduct needs assessments to evaluate the physical, emotional, financial and social needs of elders to determine appropriate support and services.
  • Provide specific and individual advocacy to elders to assist navigating health care, housing, legal and social systems to ensure their needs are being met.
  • Monitor elders’ rights to ensure they’re being treated with dignity and respect by advocating against neglect, abuse and/or exploitation.
  • Investigate and resolve complaints from or on behalf of elders.
  • Provide education and outreach to inform elders, families and the community about elder’s rights, available services and aging-related issues through workshops, events and materials.
  • Identify at-risk individuals to proactively offer support to elders in vulnerable situations and intervene when necessary to protect their safety and rights.
  • Encourage elder’s empowerment by supporting elders in making informed decisions and helping them maintain control over their lives.
  • Maintains confidentiality and a professional behavior while working with elders, families and within the community.
  • Stay informed and up to date on aging issues, such as laws, regulations, policy changes, and best practices related to elder care, health and social services.
  • Provide proper tracking and report outcomes - these should be detailed reports and logs of activity, challenges/issues, support provided, outcomes, etc.
  • Assist with other tasks as assigned.
  • Because of the Tribe's commitment to community service and the well-being of its members, each employee may be expected to perform a wide range of office and field duties from time to time. Such duties may or may not be related to their regular responsibilities.


Graduation from a high school or equivalent and three (3) years of related work experience.

Knowledge of general office principles and practices, operation of standard office equipment that may include computer, copier, fax machines and multi-line telephone, software applications relative to the position assignment, basic mathematics.

Skilled in keyboarding, word processing (knowledge of software programs varies according to position assignment), oral and written communications, interpersonal and human relations, problem-solving, customer service - in person and via telephone (discretion, patience, etiquette, professionalism) following oral and written instructions, prioritizing workload and adapting to changes in work load demand, providing limited training, maintaining confidentiality of sensitive matters, following through on assignments as directed, initiative and accountability skills for work product or service.

Continuously uses vision. Frequently sits for long periods of time. Frequently talks and listens. Manual dexterity for computer work and routine paperwork. Occasionally walks and reaches with hands and arms. Occasionally lifts up to 25 lbs.
