What are the responsibilities and job description for the Collections & Exhibits Manager position at Muckleshoot Indian Tribe?

Under general supervision, will supervise the Collections Specialist and oversee MIT collections and Tribal owned historic properties. Will frequently interact with the Public, Contractors, Vendors, Tribal members to help collect, preserve, and provide access to cultural materials and sites.

  • Collects artifacts, documents and other materials of cultural, historical or archaeological significance per the Tribe’s collection and archaeological curation policies that will educate, protect and preserve the tribe’s history and culture.
  • Design, fabrication and installation of rotating small exhibits at designated places on the Reservation. Coordinate larger exhibits as assigned with professional consultants under the director of the supervisor.
  • Writes and updates policies and procedures for curation, accessioning and access to the collection. Keeps official collection records of each item and/or collection, along with Tribal Resolutions governing the Tribe’s collections.
  • Develops and maintains environmentally controlled, secure storage for the Tribe’s Collections including, but not limited to, artifacts, photographs, oral histories, books and maps, on site and off site.
  • Receives and curates archaeological collections from the Tribal Archaeologist and outside agencies approved by Tribal Council and assures MIT Repository meets Federal guidelines.
  • Cleans, photographs and catalogs items, keeps current and maintains the Tribe’s inventory of artifacts, archaeological collections, reference library and the historical archive holdings as well as the curation of Federal Collections.
  • Processes collection inquiries and assists researchers of the collection by scheduling visits, researching materials and providing these materials as needed per policy.
  • Attends Preservation Committee meetings as needed; attends meetings with outside entities as needed.
  • Produces or assists in the preparation of studies, records, correspondence, reports and other publications such as the annual Preservation Program calendar.
  • Administrator of PastPerfect DB, assign access levels, train staff and interns as needed, and work with IT Department of security, updates, and backup.
  • Develop, manage and interprets the Reynold’s Farm & Indian Agency Historic site and other cultural sites as assigned in collaboration with the Preservation Program Committee, MIT Facilities Department, and Tribal Council.
  • Because of the Tribe’s commitment to community service and the well-being of its members, each employee may be expected to perform a wide range of office and field duties from time to time. Such duties may or may not be related to their regular job responsibilities.


Required Master’s degree from accredited college or university in Museum Studies, Anthropology, History, or related field, with an emphasis on Native American Culture or Studies. Must show five (5) years of experience in collections and/or exhibitions at a cultural institution/museum, with at least three (3) years of experience dealing with Northwest Native Collections after receiving Master’s Degree in required field. A minimum of two (2) years of supervisory/management experience.

Preferred Understanding of the museum best practice and Past Perfect museum software is desired.

Knowledge of best practices in museum curation, policy and procedures; library cataloging systems; historical cultural preservation techniques; cultural resource management; Muckleshoot specific and Northwest tribal history, culture, customs and traditions; research methods and tribal resources; Skill in Museum software (i.e. PastPerfect, Excel, etc.); photo editing/photoshop; GIS basics for tracking and mapping sites; identifying, classifying, and describing historic/cultural sites and artifacts; analysis and problem solving; oral and written communication; sensitivity to protocols, cultural customs and traditions when addressing elders, tribes, and spiritual matters; grant writing; Ability to work regularly scheduled hours in a reliable and consistent manner; work independently or collaboratively, organize work, and meet deadlines; multi-tasks; interact professionally with others; independently and prudently act in the best interest of the collection to protect exhibits and property.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms. The employee will be required to drive for long periods at a time with frequent breaks to open or close a gate as needed. Closing a gate will require the employee to use their fingers to handle gates, locks and keys. This will also require them to feel, grasp or operate objects, tools, or controls; and twist, push/pull. The employee is occasionally required to climb; balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee continuously works in outside weather conditions. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places; and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; and occasionally to fumes or airborne particles, extreme cold, and vibration.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Must have a current and valid Washington State driver’s license.
