Position Information
Position Title: Medical Assistant
Reports To: Clinical Supervisor / Practice Manager
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Position Summary
The Medical Assistant (MA) is responsible for supporting clinical providers in delivering high-quality patient care. This role includes patient intake, clinical support, documentation, coordination of care, and participation in clinic workflows. The MA ensures efficient patient flow, accurate documentation, and adherence to clinical and regulatory standards.
Position Qualifications
- At least 18 years old.
- High School diploma or equivalent required.
- Medical Assistant certification preferred but not required.
- Current BLS certification (or ability to obtain within required timeframe).
- Experience in a clinical or healthcare setting preferred.
- Reliable transportation.
Essential Functions
Patient Care
- Room patients and obtain vital signs, medical history, and chief complaints.
- Prepare patients for examination and assist providers during visits.
- Administer medications, vaccines, and treatments as ordered and within scope.
- Perform point-of-care testing and specimen collection as needed.
- Provide patient education and discharge instructions.
Clinical Documentation
- Accurately document patient interactions, procedures, and provider instructions in the EHR.
- Ensure completeness and accuracy of medical records.
- Assist providers with chart preparation and documentation workflows.
Clinic Flow and Operations
- Manage patient flow to ensure timely rooming and provider efficiency.
- Prepare exam rooms and maintain clinical supplies.
- Clean and restock rooms between patients.
- Support front office or administrative workflows as needed.
Coordination of Care
- Assist with referrals, prior authorizations, and follow-up care coordination.
- Communicate with patients, pharmacies, labs, and external providers.
- Support continuity of care through accurate follow-up and documentation.
Compliance
- Follow infection control standards, including universal precautions.
- Maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA regulations.
- Ensure accurate documentation meets audit and regulatory standards.
- Adhere to OSHA and clinic safety protocols.
Team Duties
- Participate in team meetings and daily huddles.
- Collaborate with clinical and administrative staff to improve workflows.
- Support clinic performance goals and patient care initiatives.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
