JOB SUMMARY

 

We have an exciting opportunity for six (6) Groundskeeper positions located at our campus in San Jacinto, CA and in our campus in Menifee, CA. The Groundskeeper supports the Facilities Department by primarily maintaining the grounds. Also performs custodial duties and special projects as needed and requested by the Facilities Supervisor. Under supervision and in accordance with schedules or periodic instructions, the Groundskeeper performs general gardening work and maintains grounds in an assigned area of a campus.

 

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

 

• This position serves District-Wide; applicants may be assigned to any district facility. Work hours and worksite locations are subject to change depending on department needs.

• A six-month probationary period must be successfully completed before the selected candidate is considered a permanent employee of the district.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Gardening/Grounds

 

• Mow lawns with riding lawnmower, prunes plants, trees, shrubs and planting of new plants

• Pick up debris and paper and performs general grounds cleaning

• Edge sidewalks with edger and string trimmer

• Mow around trees with string trimmer, operates edger's, blowers

• Water lawns, trees, and shrubs

• Checks for irrigation problems, performs minor repair and/or replace sprinklers

• Assist the Senior Groundskeeper in maintaining athletic fields

• Assist in the cleaning of locker rooms

• Lock/unlock doors as needed

• Perform other custodial tasks as directed by Facilities Supervisor

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIESThe incumbent should possess knowledge of: 

 

• General gardening and grounds maintenance methods

• Proper methods of planting, cultivating, and caring for hedges, ornamental trees, shrubs, lawns and flowers and the use and care of gardening materials, tools, and equipment

 

The incumbent should possess skills in: 

 

• Using non-powered hand tools, ladders, buffers, floor cleaning machines, and special cleaning solvents

• Working effectively as a team member

• Meeting schedules and timelines

• Communicating effectively both orally and in writing

• Maintaining documentation and records

• Handling multiple assignments simultaneously and set priorities based on customer needs

 

The incumbent should possess the ability to: 

 

• Recognize the more common species of ornamental shrubs, trees and flowers grown in California

• Perform strenuous physical work, as described in this class

• Mechanical aptitude and motor coordination

• Operate skillfully small trucks and power-driven grounds equipment

• Read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position

• Follow simple oral and written instructions

• Lead the work of others, including the ability to provide on-the-job training, maintain cooperative working relationships with administration, faculty, students and other employees

• Analyze situations and take effective actions

• Plan and organize work schedules and routines

• Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others, including those from a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty and staff

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

• A high school diploma or GED; AND

• Two (2) years of professional experience in the care and maintenance of landscaped areas; AND

• Read, write and speak English sufficiently to carry out oral/written instructions and to read/understand/follow directions, label warnings, etc.;AND

• Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and staff

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

• Possession of or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire, a valid California driver's license with a driving record acceptable to the District

• If selected, employment commencement is contingent upon successful enrollment in the District's DMV Pull Program. Employees enrolled in the DMV Pull Program MUST continuously maintain a driving record that meets District requirements set forth in the current policy as it relates to allowable types of infractions and points.

 

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Possession of a Qualified Applicator Certificate, for use in applying a variety of pesticides and herbicides

• Background in construction

• Background in ground plumbing

• Prior experience in approaching work and interaction with colleagues and/or students in an equity-minded manner. Ability to promote an inclusive and welcoming work/education environment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Environment: Work environment varies based on the demands and needs during each day which will include outdoor walking and standing. Sitting in an office or a meeting. Work is performed primarily outdoors. May require travel from site to site and withstand constant exposure to year-round climate conditions. Walk the grounds on foot or with a District vehicle.

 

Physical: Primary function requires sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an outdoor setting and travel from site to site; to stand or sit for extended periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach and twist; to carry, push and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; to lift or move 50 to 70 pounds frequently; and to verbally communicate to exchange information in person, via the radio and on the telephone.

 

Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction; vision sufficient to read computer screens and printed documents; and to operate assigned equipment.

 

Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
