Position Summary

MSD of Shakamak seeks a passionate educator who values strong relationships, student-centered instruction, and meaningful community connection. We are looking for an individual committed to helping students grow as readers, writers, communicators, and critical thinkers.

The High School English Teacher is responsible for planning and delivering engaging instruction in English Language Arts that promotes literacy, critical thinking, communication, and college/career readiness. The teacher will create a safe, supportive, and academically rigorous classroom environment where students develop skills in reading, writing, speaking, listening, analysis, and research.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Plan and deliver engaging instruction in high school English courses, which may include literature, composition, speech, or related electives.
• Develop lessons that promote reading comprehension, analytical thinking, writing proficiency, vocabulary development, and effective communication.
• Utilize instructional strategies that differentiate learning to meet diverse student needs and learning styles.
• Assess student progress through formative and summative assessments and use data to guide instructional decisions.
• Provide timely, meaningful feedback to students and maintain accurate academic records.
• Establish and maintain a positive classroom culture that promotes respect, engagement, and high expectations.
• Implement classroom management practices consistent with district and school expectations.
• Participate in intervention planning, remediation efforts, and Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) to address student learning needs.
• Use instructional technology, student data systems, and digital learning platforms to enhance instruction, engagement, and communication.
• Collaborate with colleagues, counselors, intervention staff, and administrators to support student success.
• Communicate effectively with parents/guardians regarding student progress, concerns, and achievements.
• Participate in required professional development, staff meetings, school improvement efforts, and continuous professional growth.
• Supervise students in classrooms and assigned duty areas to ensure safety and appropriate behavior.
• Perform additional duties as assigned by the principal or superintendent.

Qualifications

Required

• Valid Indiana Department of Education teaching license in Secondary English/Language Arts or ability to obtain appropriate licensure.
• Bachelor’s degree in English, Education, or related field.
• Knowledge of adolescent literacy development and effective instructional practices.
• Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Ability to build positive relationships with students, staff, and families.

Preferred

• Previous successful high school teaching experience.
• Experience integrating instructional technology into classroom instruction.
• Familiarity with dual-credit, college readiness, or career-connected learning opportunities.

Work Environment

Work is performed primarily in a school classroom environment with frequent interaction with students, staff, and families. The position may require participation in extracurricular or after-school activities. Coaching and extracurricular sponsorship opportunities may be available but are not required for employment.

Terms of Employment

Salary and benefits are based on the negotiated teacher contract and district-approved compensation plan. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of required background checks and all state-mandated employment requirements.
